Thanks for the link but does anyone know where you can actualy buy it? :)

I think it could be a prescription-only medicine, so you'd get it from your vet.

Your dog isn't any sort of collie, is it?

I am trying to find out for a friend  if it can be bought in this country cheaper as apparently it's sold here in it's generic name.I can only find references to horses though.

Hi, I bought some Revolution which also treats Heartworm.  It contains Selamectin which is also safe for collie breeds (so the leaflet says).  I bought mine on the internet - I can't remember offhand where, but will find out if you would like me to?

Thanks Fiona but it isn't for Collies .I have just had a search through the old threads and someone mentioned that ivermectin isn't licenced for dogs here so I doubt it is available in that form, many thanks for your help anyway :)

Ivermectin is only licensed for farm animals in the UK. It can be used for dogs but should really be under a vet's guidance (and when it is used, it is normally for bad mite infestations, to avoid more prolonged treatment), and certain breeds (collie breeds, collie crosses) are known to be so sensitive to it that they can actually die -I also remember reading in DW a few years ago an article by a vet mentioning she had treated a Golden Retriever who had died from it. In any event it simply is not possble to buy Ivermectin in the UK unless you are a farmer and can prove it is for sheep/pig/cattle use. I actually use it for my cats myself if and when they get mites (show cats can be quite prone to Cheyletiella mites and this is very difficult to treat with anything else), but this is then from a vet under her supervision -not all vets will sell it to you. I must admit I'd never consider it for the dogs as the risks are too high. For heartworm I think brand name medaction (again from a vet) for the specific purpose would be better, as the correct dosage is everything.

I can get Ivermectin over the counter for horses (in the form of Eqvalan) and does not say not to use on dogs, but I never have!

In my experience, when Ivermectin is used for skin parasites it a clear liquid  injected under the skin, rather than in the form of a paste wormer.

hi charlie...most kennel owners here use 1 percent ivomec for dogs at a dose of 1/1othcc per ten pounds for heartworms and other worms less for just heartworms orally i just squirt in in their mouths..i have used it for years it generally runs about 99dollars for 200ml   though i use the heartgaurd for bitches that are bred   http://www.revivalanimal.com/Default.asp?bhcd2=1116361991

Kelly it is not licensed for use on dogs in the UK

You may be able to buy it mail order from Eire? One of the on line vet supplies web sites has a branch in Southern Ireland, but this info may be out of date. Apologies if it is.

Or any dogs that have the collies/Aussies behind them
- By kelly mccoy [us] Date 18.05.05 11:55 UTC
HI Moomaiden...its not licensened for dogs here either.but is the exact same ingredient as heartguard just at a higher concentration.alot of dog drugs were originally used for horses or farm animals..i also use the ivomec for my horse

If you want the product to treat heartworm, then the Revolution I mentioned treats that in all dogs, not just collies (and is safe for all).

Fiona

But Ivermectin is very dangerous for any dog with any collie breed in its make up & there are other safer products I think
- By Alexanders [gb] Date 18.05.05 16:30 UTC
Revolution contains Selamectin, not Ivermectin and is safe for Collies - manufacturer states this (also my Mum had used it on her collie twice with no ill effects.)
