Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dog weeing when asleep?

A friend of mine has a 4 year old bitch who was speyed after her first season. She has always leaked a bit when very excited and has now started to wee big time, sometimes when asleep and unawares. She is on propalin drops with little effect. The vet has mentioned some sort of corrective surgery which could carry a highish risk of losing bitch(?) .My friend is worried sick. She would rather have the problem than risk losing her. The bitch also seems to have put on a lot of weight lately despite lots of exercise, although has been stealing some of other dogs food. Till now has always been picky eater. Could the weight thing be connected. Any thoughts or suggestions welcomed.
thanks

Sue

I have had the same problem with my bitch when she was spayed. Luckily the propalin drops are working for her although I have had to increase the dose recently. Her weight is still remaining a problem despite being on low cal food and increased excercise.

How old is your girl now?

Mine is now six but the wetting problem started relatively soon after her op just over two years ago, her weight gain started before the wetting problem. My vet says all bitches are different re gaining weight after spaying, Mallory was always a very substantial bitch don't know if that got anything to do with it. I've always had bitches up until Luke and she is the first bitch I have had spayed so my first experience of this problem.

Excess weight does appear to male the problem worse as is having the bitch spayed young.

I agree but just seems strange that weight gain has only appeared since the urine problem.

Excess weight can put more pressure on the bladder.

I would try the bitch on some of the homeopathic remedies and see if that improves the situation.
