Entered for a open show today...always try to put in an entry for them as they put on elkhound classes.Well the hounds were scheduled for after the toy breeds of which there was CKC's,pug,s/c chi's,sc chi's,AVNSC toy.The judging started at 9.30 so we set off at 10am and arrived at 10.30 thinking that hounds would be lucky to be in the ring before dinner but we also had JH for my daughter.Well on arriving we found our ring and the whole order of judging had been changed and elkhounds had been put on 3rd in the ring after 2 small nemerically breeds and the judging was over and done!! Now I know the judging order is 'proposed' and not set but when an open show is held in a small hall where there are 400+ entries I try not to go too early as it can be rather stressful/cramoed but to change the order so drastically is IMO not on.There were 8 elkhounds entered...only 3 arrived in time for judging....will be thinking very hard before I put in an entry for this show again

Oh dear Archer :-(  count to 10..and again :-))

I sometimes wonder why it gets moved around but I guess they had a reason..

I hate it when you arrive and they first avaliable ring.. then it is hours waiting. Especially as you could have had an extra hour in bed ;-)

It's one of the reasons that I don't do Open Shows any more Archer!  I can remember when Open Shows were a brilliant training ground for breed judges and our puppies.  They were organised with the exhibitor in mind, with a breed judge of your own breed and an order of judging and a "not before" time for guidance.  But for the past 5 years or so in my breed we rarely have a breed judge or given an order of judging.
If you've spent a couple of hours bathing your dog and then an hour or so driving to the venue, not counting the getting up early to exercise dogs left at home, the last thing that you need it to miss your class!  :(  And they wonder why entries at Open Shows have fallen??!!
Let's hope that your next show works better for you.

Have you calmed down yet, Archer?  Stuart and I were sorry you missed the show, and I'll bet the judge was sorrier, as there were only two there to go over.  We did not have as sociable a day as usual, and were home in time for lunch.  We had only just made it into the ring, as I had noticed that outside rings would be used if the weather was good, and I was worried that the hounds might be sent outside, so we got there rather earlier than usual.  I actually hadn't finished grooming Raider, and his breeches looked rather scruffy.
Still, console yourself with the thought that it wasn't as bad as what happened at the show I judged at yesterday, where an exhibitor went to the wrong showground, some miles away.  He ended up going to a car boot sale instead before coming on to join us some time after the judging.

I think I know which show you are talking about :d  Such a shame as it's usually a good show, I especially like it as I've won BIS and res. BIS there with one of my Pomeranians.  I meant to enter but forgot, glad I didn't now as knowing me I would of missed my class too!  Did you see any Spanish there?  One of my friends was entered but she's not mentioned that she went.

I cant see any excuse for that - you should complain to the secretary. I would have thought that the secretaries should be keen for entries and this is an example of why open shows are having problems. In my experience, most secretaries fall over backwards to make things run smoothly for fear of losing entries next time round, more are giving "not before" times (and sticking to them) and even accepting entries a few days late.

Well I did an open show yesterday and I had YKC stakes, junior handling and AVNSC terrier puppy. When I look to see if the junior handling had started the younger group we all standing near the ring and I asked the lady why they hadn't started and she said because there were some handlers were showing in the gundog group. Anyway I said to my mom I wonder when the AVNSC terrier group will be in and the lady said that man over there is giving the last call for them! Well nobody had heard and there was nobody in the ring so I had to run back for my dog and run all the way back to make it in time. It turned out that we were scheduled for after lots of other dogs but there were no WHWT etc... so they moved us all around and into a different ring" I am positive that they didn't call it because a lady that was right next to the ring with her wheaten didn't hear anybody call and missed her class and nobody else heard the call. I was such a hectic day!
