Ann, really sorry to hear about your dog. My Maddie had this in January, she was operated on and part of her bowel removed. She was poorly for a long time but recovered quite quickly, about a week, but we kept her very quiet and calm, made sure the kids didn't excite her into playing and told visitors not to go to her but go in another room so she wouldn't be able to get excited and try to jump up. Mind you with the 'collar' on she couldn't move quickly anyway. She was in the vets for a week prior to her op and it was a really awful time. She lost a stone in weight and looked awful, she's a leonberger by the way and was 10 months old when this happened, she is food intolerent and is on Hills hypoallegenic but I can now feed her some raw food but nothing with chicken or beef because this gives her the 'runs' something awful! She looks so much fitter, better than before dare I say.
I'm sure your pup will be fine, tho it is very upsetting. If you want to talk some more I will be happy to listen. And there are lots of people on here to offer you comfort and advice.

hi ann, it took a while to put weight back on after her op and it also took a while to find a food that suited her. gsd's are prone to having easily upset stomachs as it is. so take your time and find a good quality premium diet that suits your dog. there are several 'top of the range' diets on the market but what may be good for one dog may not be good for yours so take your time and get it right. She still isn't what she weighed before her op, but she's only a couple of kilos short :) But she was a big eater before and now that she can only have certain foods she is slowly gaining weight. She wasn't exercised much afterwards neither so that helped her gain weight.

hi ann  our german shepherd bitch intersersepted when she was about 6 months old. the problem part of the small intestine that had telescoped over itself was stretched out and returned to its normal pink colour straight away. she was kept in for a few days and on the day that she was due to be let home it happened again. this time when the vet opertated he removed 18 inches of gut and put small stitches in the loops of the gut to prevent it from happening again. she is now 5 years old and has not had any problems because of this condition since so fingers crossed all should be well with your pup.

Our 7 week old Siberian had this, he was operated on & is now 10 years old. He is not on any special diet just complete kibble & lamb mince.

hi ann we are just going through the same thing with our 5 month old english springer spaniel `kayla` at the min she is still at the vets been there for 5 days after having a large part of her bowel removed were hoping to get her back 2 morow but im also very worried about what to feed her how shes going to be and weve also been told it can come back again
- By Missie Date 12.05.05 21:50 UTC
You should be able to feed her whatever you fed her before? Your vet should be able to put your mind at rest. Maddie just became food intolerent, I personally believe, because she was so ill beforehand and the vets had at first decided it was a bad case of colitis (long story). Anyway, as some have said above, most dogs can just eat normally afterwards and hopefully it never comes back to any of our dogs.

china is on day 10 from her op the vet has put her on hills prescription diet a/d at the moment she could only have a table spoon full mixed with water every 3 hours at first i have to gradually increase the amount giveing a little more each day she is not able to have anything solid yet but yesterday the vet said i can start putting a little compleat into it she is now on half a small tin with the mashed compleat every 3 hours your vet will tell you what to feed and for long before she can be on her normal food. it is so worrying i hope your dog gets better soon....
