i think my female samoyed has had a phantom pregnancy,(she was mated no pups arrived) now she is loosing terrible amounts of hair so much so i can c her pink skin,r samoyeds prone to skin disease or is this part of her phantom,(she has never had a skin disease before)any advise will be welcome, this has happened over the space of three days

I dont know but i would take her to the vet for a check up. They can loose her to thyroid problems or skin irrtations but i wouldn't like to say as i'm not an expert.

Warm regards Susan

Hi, Don't worry about loosing a lot of hair, the bitch is loosing her winter coat, and there will be loads......
Bitches loose a lot more hair than the dogs, also before there season, it is good to see there pink skin.
It means you are grooming her well. that will stop skin conditions. I bath my two regular, in the bath
I use only baby shampoo on ther faces though, they love it. Then, I put a shop brand conditioner on the coat and comb them wet. Then a good rinse to get every think out of there coat, rub with a towel, then
a quick hair dryer all over. when they are completly dry, you brush them backwards. What beauties.......

thanks for ur reply, made me feel better,my bitch had been living outside for three years before i got her and now she lives in the house could that also be related to the hair loss, her general health is fine she is not acting any different

The answer is "YES" Pam. Living inside does make a lot of diffrence, central heating ect;
Don't worry.

If the bitch has been mated, did you leave her with the stud, for how long? how many times did they tie?
could you feel the pups? was she scaned, or has she absorded them?

Sorry to here that It's disapointing though.

when i got my bitch the previous owner gave me the wrong month she was due on,my male samoyed is only two and was his first time, she got stuck only the once, the reason i thought she was pregnant was she was skratching at my carprt, she had lived out side for three years and is now living indoors, couldnt feel any pups

My nextdoor neighbours' Samoyed would loose just about all her fur every spring, she lived outdoors and had a very full coat but it went down to just about naked at this time of year.  They would peg handfuls of it to the washing line and the nesting birds went mad for it :D

Is it quite common for pups to be absorbed or is it a sammy thing
- By Brainless [gb] Date 13.05.05 20:00 UTC
It has been found to be much more common than was at one time thought, as with the advent of scaning pups have been seen which later were absorbed, a bit like with human beings where the rate of miscarriage in the first part of the first trimester is much more common than you weould think in the past being just put down to a late heavy period.

No I am lead to beleve it can happen to any bitch. My sister inlaws G.S.'s have done this
sometimes if they fell or get stressed. Or sometimes there doesn't seem to be any reason.
