Topic Dog Boards / Health / Frontline on bitch about to be mated?
- By shifting sands [gb] Date 11.05.05 08:33 UTC
Please could someone tell me whether its ok to use Frontline on a bitch that is about to be mated. A quick reply would be appreciated if possible as my friend is due to take her to the dog , leaving 10.30 am today. :-) Thanks

I wouldnt do it
its a chemical that sits on the coat and dogs lick themselves.

Thanks, that was my gut reaction too, pleased to say she didn't use it.

I don't see why it shouldn't be safe. I've just looked at their website and it doesn't say not to use it then. What does it say on the bottle (the instructions on mine are in French!)?

I am just one of those people who dont like to use things unless totally necessary
Im not sure if it is or isnt safe but I wouldnt use it :-)

Agree with Carolyn.

Frontline spot on is not safe to be used on pregnant or lactating bitches.
Frontline spray is ok to be used on pups in the nest from 48 hours old & they should be seperated from the bitch until dry.

Personally I wouldn't use any

Advantage is safe in pregnancy. - Although I wouldn't use.  :)

Any idea if herbal flea drops are okay to use on pregnant bitches.

Ah, I know nothing about the Spot on version because I never use it, only the spray. Just out of interest, is the spray supposedly safe for pregnant bitches?

Quotes taken from label of frontline spray.

"puppies and kittens may be safely treated from 2 days of age. Allow litters to dry before returning to their mother"

"Frontline has been shown in laboratory animals to have no adverse effects during pregnancy in mammals and may be used in pregnant and lactating bitches and queens once the offspring are more than 2 days of age"

Thanks Smudgley!

Edit: It's very badly worded, though! I mean, who's heard of a pregnant bitch whose offspring are more than 2 days old? :D
:)

lol- I thought exactly the same thing JG - it is badly worded.

Hi there ,   I used frontline spray on my bitch when she had pups, from memory they were about a week old, I found a flea on Mum - so i sprayed her, to my dismay the pup would not feed from her as she had a smell they could detect so I had to quickly bath her and then every thing was OK.
