My puppy has started to smell this evening. I dont think its his anal glands as his stools are smallish and quite hard, but his bottom smells of fish, as does the carpet where ever he has just been sitting. He is fed on a natural diet, so we have not had any problems with him smelling up untill now. However he has just been wormed for the first time - could this have anything to do with it ? thanks. A fishy smell is usually a sign of full glands.  It is unusual for a young puppy to need emptying, however, I think small hard motions do not empty them reliably you need bulky stools to do that, you could try adding a little bran to the diet but you may need them emptied in the short term.  With a young puppy I would always let a vet do it rather than attempt it myself.

Dogs can also vent their anal glands at times of stress/fright.......

What do you feed him on as diet can affect the anal glands and how quick they fill up?
