We have got into the nostalgia of watching "All Creatures Great and Small" on UK Gold - a bit sad, I know, but remember I am dogless at present...:(
Tonight there was the very sad situation of a lady who lost a beloved dog to distemper - presumably before routine vaccination was introduced - a timely reminder of its importance.
On a subjective level, I was interested that the dog appeared to have made a complete recovery, then died quite suddenly following a seizure. I was very interested in this as my daughter's epilepsy started a couple of months after an apparently uncomplicated measles infection - and I understand that distemper in dogs is very similar to measles in humans.
Let me hastily add that this was 32 years ago, and she was only 10 months therefore not old enough to have had her measles injection. She probably caught it from a neighbour's older grandchildren. Had they been protected, she may not have become ill - a reminder again of the public health importance of vaccination.
:( :( :(

Issy had the MMR but she still managed to catch Measles :( at the same time as she had Chicken Pox :( Obviously for her the MMR didn't work but it wouldn't put me off vaccinating any others we may have.

Are there many reported cases of animal vacinnes failing? What are the symptoms of the various diseases we vacinnate against in puppies?

Hi Fiona, have you read Reddys Story? That will give you the symptoms of Parvo.Just put any of the diseases you want to know about into a search engine & also have a look at Dr Jean Dodds site & Canine Health Concern, they have a lot of info on vacc.
I personally dont believe we are getting a true report on the possible failures/reactions to vacc because not a lot of people know about/how to go about reporting them.

PS I forgot to tell you parvo has a VERY distinctive smell all of its own! lol

Thanks Christine,

I'll have a look on google - as for Parvo having a distinctive smell, Holly's got one of those anyway :D

I've had a puppy die of distemper many years ago and it's not something I want to go through again. She was a corgi and already had the disease when we got her although we didn't know at the time, despite all the best efforts of the vet we lost her. She did seem to be recovering, but this disease attacks the central nervous system causing all sorts of problems. Saw this programme before and the thing I found odd was the advice to go and get another dog straight away, we were told to wait at least 6 months to make sure the virus was not still on our property. When we got Ben from Battersea he went down with a really nasty type of kennel cough that goes round the rescue homes. I was warned by the staff at Battersea that should he come down with it, my vet may think it's distemper, and sure enough, it took a lot of treatment to shift and the vet wasn't convinced until quite a way into the treatment that it was "just" kennel cough.

The lady i bought my first elkhound from, who started up in 1961 had lost her first one with distemper, and alos had to wait for several months before having another puppy!

Those who do not vaccinate and rely on Homeopathic nosodes cannot rely on this either. An aquaintance of mine lost both her Rotie pups at close to a year old with Parvo a few months ago, and the mother was very ill but recovered. Thankfully none of the dogs at ringcraft or obedience were affected, but most if not all were vaccinated conventionally at least with the primary puppy course!

Her bitch pup was away from home at the time of her outbreak, and after her return some weeks later, and being kept seperate from her Mum, and not allowed in back garden where Mum and dead brother had been for 6 weeks, as soon as she was put back with Mum, she got it and died!

I know its been said before, but I wonder how many of those reporting success with nosodes really have contining immunity from conventional puppy vaccination/previos boosers and/or live in an area with low parvo/distemper levels because the majority of dogs are conventionally vaccinated.

I agree with you there Sharon, all my dogs with one exception have been vaccinated, he wasn't done because of a suspected allergic reation to the first puppy jab. I live in a healthy dog area and he never caught anything in his 16 years, but we were very careful where we took him and it did restrict life. Much is made of Parvo, but distemper is still about and having lost one pup with it I won't take any risks, we recently had a case crop up in the village luckily it was a pup that hadn't been out so the risk was minimal.
