Topic Dog Boards / Health / Ear won't heal..help!

Don't worry, we are going to the vet but I wondered if anyone else had any ideas :D
Kayla was at the vets last week for an ear infection and all was gpoing well, apart from Idõ thinking her ears are chew toys! So we think he has maybe been a bit rough and she ended up with a small nick out of the very end of one her ear leathers..the first we knew was the sprays of bollod all over and the mysterious patch of blood on the other side of her head. To say we were puzzled is a bit of an understatement, Idõ was just losing his last puppy teeth so we assumed the blood was his until we looked at her OTHER ear!
Anyway, forgive my ramblings :D The big problem now is that it just won't heal, well it does but them either the little man starts playing with her ears again or she shakes her head and the scab falls off, we are just going in circles!
We've tried stypic powder, which initially does the job, plasters, bandaging the ear to her head(boy she looked sad) and the dreaded plastic cone collar :D
What are we meant to do, bar getting the damn thing cortorised(sp?)????!!!!

I had this once with my Dally.  A female Dally told him off at a show for being too forward

It took months to heal, but in the end we did it with antibiotic powder (someone suggested one used for horses as it was stronger, Negasunt was the name of it) this worked a treat and it healed within a few days.

Good luck

Yes Emily, it is wound powder. I still have it actually, never thought to look at the date.  The normal dog one didn't work, it kept scabbing and the scab came off and it bled again.

I don't know whether is was ready to heal when I tried the horse one or not, but it was the only thing that worked.

May well give it a go, the biggest probelm is that the scab that forms is not like a normal scab, its very large and protrutes outwards alot and therefore is open to getting caught.
Thanks again
Emily :)

With mine I just kept putting pressure on the ear every now and again especially after the shake and the blood coming again.  It's not easy when you've got other dogs that are trying to help you but licking the area !!  My dogs was actually after a fight with my other one and the blood loss was tremendous and very frightening at the time.  Luckily it didnt take too long to heal.  I hope that yours is OK soon and I'm sorry that I'm not much help.

Why not get one of those huge plastic collar thingys ( cant rememeber their proper name!) that dogs have on after operations. It will protect the ears until they heal up properly.

We once had an ear problem, every time she shook, the scab came off and it bled everywhere. Went on for weeks. She had the edge of the ear trimmed back and stitched but still split it open even with a collar on. In the end the vet used veterinary superglue....worked a treat!
