Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Confused about worming pregnant bitch
- By Pedlee Date 09.05.05 14:13 UTC
My bitch (who is now at day 47) was wormed (Drontol Plus) a couple of days after coming into season as I knew I was going to mate her at this season. I then consulted my vet (at day 43) about worming her again during pregnancy and was told not to bother with the day 40 to 2 days after whelping dose (7.5ml daily) recommended but to give her 15ml Panacur 10% that day and another 15ml a week later as her worm burden was likely to be very small. I then spoke to the manufacturers of Panacur who said I really should be giving the recommended dose, not the dose advised by my vet, to reduce the pups burden.

I am now totally confused and am thinking of giving no more wormers until the pups are born.

Any advice or comments would be gratefully received.

I had a similar experience with my vet.  She said that she did,nt see the need for worming everyday up until whelping but just to give my girl one dose of panacur instead. The vet said just to then dose her along with the puppies at around 2 weeks. When I got home and checked the instructions and how many tablets, she had given me too many for her weight. I too am a bit confused but I also feel that I should be able to trust the vet to get it right.

Our vet told us if the bitch had been wormed just before mating, then to worm again just after whelping, and the pups every 2 weeks from the age of 2 weeks onwards.  Worked fine for us.

What drug did you use for worming? A lot of the posts on here are saying they wouldn't use Panacur.

All my dogs are regularly wormed with Drontol Plus and I've never had a problem with that, so am thinking maybe sticking with the Drontol group would be better.

This is my first litter and i want to do everything right for my bitch and her pups.

I have always wormed before mating and then from the 42 days to 2 days post whelping using Panacur that I bulk buy.  Never had a problem and have done this now on, 4 generations of bitches.

Only trouble I had was worming pups too often after the dam had been wel wormed, and now I only do them at 3 1/2 and 7 weeks then monthly from 12 weeks to 6 months.

I do Mum again when the pups have left for new homes, and all theother dogs get done then (they also get done same time as the in season bitch).

I have used both Drontal and Pnacur - the vet advises me to change every so often so the worms don't get immune.

I use Drontal.  Only because myself and friends had  a problem some years ago with Panacur

Hi All,

Don't want to be a scare monger but panacur made my old girl very ill and triggered a stroke. (she is 19) I have never used it since and had no problems with her on other brands.

Also I was at the vets last week with my preggie girl and I was also told that as she was wormed week before mating not to bother until pups born.

Take care all you expectant mumsout there

I follow the panacur instructions for pregnant bitches by the letter and have had very good success with it.
