Topic Dog Boards / Health / Please tell me if it is rabies in dog
- By ngocvan [vn] Date 08.05.05 03:11 UTC
2 recent days my dog produces more saliva. His jaw is hanging open with tongue hanging out and saliva dribbling out of the mouth. Is it rabies? I have searched for rabies information. It is said that the symtoms of rabies are:
"PRODROMAL STAGE (the first 1 and 1/2 days after syptoms have started)
Friendly animals become shy etc.
Change in tone of the dog's bark
Chewing at the bite site
Fever
Loss of appetite
Subtle changes in behavior"
My dog shows no symtoms like those.

Please tell me if it is rabies or just because the weather in my country is too hot now ( 40 degree while the normal temperature is 30 degree) and he is taking a lot of medicines (among of them are phenobarbital, paracetamol, vitamine E, ).

Call the vet ASAP! If it isn't rabies then it could be heatstroke

phenobarbital, paracetamol Why is your dog on these medications?

Do you have a vet nearby? As Mel said if it isnt Rabies it could be heatstroke, both of these kill dogs very quickly, all the symptoms you described are very serious!Dont waste time posting on here right now, please get your dog to the vet before it's too late :(

Please let us know how your dog gets on and if he recovers.

Very best of luck to you.

Hardly the point of the post, but I was under the impression that paracetamol was absolutely lethal to cats and dogs??

To cats, certainly. It's not quite as bad for dogs - possibly because they're generally bigger than cats, perhaps. It should certainly only be administered with the vet's say-so.

I gave it to my dog once in the middle of the night when he was suffering with middle ear disease as he seemed to be in such discomfort (I did speak the emergency vet first though). It calmed him down on that occasion. I would have never have given it to him without the vets say so.

I really hope that it's just because of paracetamol. Thank you for that information. I will stop giving it to him right now.

Please, please take your dog to the vet. Is there any reason you havnt done so already?

The internet is a great resource, but i would not use it to diagnose a possible life threatening illness.

What you describe as abnormal saliva, could be normal to the next person....

Please le tus know the outcome :)

When he suffered from canine distemper 3 months ago I did took him to the vet. Every days during 3 months he had to see the vet, undergone 5 injections a day. You can do a calculation, he had had undergone thousands of injection. Then, I decide to stop taking him to the vet and cure him at home.

I would, although it doesn't hurt them, i would not give them too often.
