Hi all.. bella has had a traumatic time today. after whelping her pups on Saturday with no probs, all appeared well. today with no warning she expelled a dead pup with its bowel outside the body. Very sad.Vet xrayed and saw another pup probably dead. Anyway she has had a emergency c section and the pup was born alive. A miracle for 2 days after whelping the others !! But Bella had to be spayed . Both mom and last pup are ok. She seems to have accepted the last pup with the others. Only time will tell for sure.Am sleeping with the gang again tonight .have christened the last pup Lucky!! Poor Bella, hopefully with lots of TLC she will be ok again soon.

OMG poor Bella and pup, it's a miracle that pup is still alive, well done for getting her to the vet and getting her sorted.  Sorry to hear she had to be spayed, but Bellas health is important!

Ahh I hope all goes well with the surviving pups and I'm sure that your girl will be OK in herself soon.  I had this happen once though had the C-section the day after the first pup was born and had another 2 pups which were alive although my mum and I had to work really hard on them to bring them round.

Fingers crossed and keep us all up-to-date.

Hi Happylotty
So sorry for poor Bella. That Lucky was alive is amazing! We lost one of Laceys 18 hours after he was born - its always so sad and you think there was something you could have done. Hope Bella makes a really speedy recovery.
I still have Lacey and remaining 3 pups sleeping in with me - its like having the children as babies all over again, the least little squeak and your up.  Thurs - Sat over 48hrs I had 2 hrs 45 mins sleep. All worth it though. :)
Good luck

Hope they are all OK now xxx
My Hollie had a pup 2 1/2 days later too.
Luckily they were both fine but the newest pup looked tiny in comparison to the others who had been guzzling for a couple of days!
The vet had tried to feel her tummy after the others but she was so stressed out by the vet that she tensed up so she couldn't really tell.
I phoned up the vets in astonishment and the vet said it is quite common for one to be born later.
By the time the pups all left the little one (we named her titch!) had caught up with all the others. She was the first one to be fully weaned too and took to solids like she had been having them forever!

Thgis sometimes happens when the bitch is mated over a period of several days - there can be pups conceived from the first mating and the last. Ususally they're all born at the time the oldest are 'ready' and the later-conceived pups are significantly smaller and weaker than the others and sometimes die. Other times they manage to hold on in there and are born on their own due date!

This has been proven when a pedigree bitch who'd had a planned mating with a dog of her own breed was 'got at' by a local dog a few days later (the bitch owner wasn't as vigilant as she should have been). The pregnancy went a head and a lovely purebred litter was born on the expecteddate, and everyone heaved a sigh of relief. Five days later they came down in the morning to find the bitch had presented them with another newborn pup - of totally different appearance to the rest! Oops!

hi just courious
would that be why you get a runt because that pup was concieved at a later mating to its bigger siblings? :)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 15.05.05 09:36 UTC
Yes, that's quite possible, even though a true 'runt' is generally weedy and unhealthy, not just smaller than the rest. Premature babies take longer to reach developmental milestones than full-term babies.
