Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / antibiotics before breeding
- By goldengirl Date 09.05.05 17:51 UTC
This will be my first time breeding my golden retriever, had 4-4 for hip score, having eye tests done next month and hoping for her next season in july/aug. I really want to do things right, one breeder told me to give my bitch a course of antibiotics before mating and another breeder told me not to bother. Can anyone else help please.

Some people recommend it but I don't believe in giving antibiotics unless there is evidence of an infection  Too much antibiotic use has contributed to the developement of resistant bacteria.  If you are worried that your bitch or the stud are carrying an infection you can organise a swab right at the beginning of the season which should allow for a result in time for antibiotics to be given if necessary before the mating.
