Hi I was just wondering what I should feed my 2 yr Rott female before she gets matted.  I have heard that giving her a lot of vegetable oil in her food is good so that this will decrease the chance of her getting an abortion is this true?  I will mate her in 6 months.

Instead of vegetable oil I would give her  an Evening Primrose capsule or Vit E supplementin her food every day. There is a supplement called "Fit and Fertile" that others have recommeded but I haven't used it, if you do a search on here you will get the info on it.  It is important that she is fit and well muscled - but not fat, when she is mated and on a very good quality feed. You do not normally increase the amount fed until at least the 5 week of pregnancy or the pups may grow too big inside and also she will become overweight and not able to cope with the labour so well.

If you haven't done them yet you should enquire with Rotty people as to what health tests your breed needs and you have plenty of time to get them done. Make sure she is well wormed before she is mated - say 4 months before  and then again a month before she is due in season. I like Drontal+. Also if her boosters will be  duearound that time them done about a month before she is due.

You need to be sure your bitch is fit and healthy
she should be hip scored.
There isnt really any need for extra anything if she is well in herself.

In some breeds people give a folic acid tablet a day from a month before mating to a week after the birth.

having bred rottweilers for 9 years i havent given my bitches anything extra except vitamin E 3 weeks b4 being mated to 3 weeks after they mated and thats it they really dont need anything else most responsible rotti breeders would have there dogs n bitches hip scored which should be done around 1 years of age as i myself wouldnt consider letting anyone use my stud dog that hadnt hip scored there bitch as hips are a big problem in rottweilers
