I have a yorkie bitch that is due to have her pups around 25/05/05 the breeder who's stud dog I used has recommended me to have her spayed at the same time as she has a caesarean, due to the fact she is quite small and definately not going to have any more litters. Can I please have some opinions on this from some breeders. Thankyou.

I think spaying at the time of a section, liking spaying around the time of a season, is riskier because of the much increased blood supply to the uterus. It is also a much more major operation than a section where the uterus is just opened and shut again, in a spay the uterus and ovaries are completely removed, organs like the bladder and bowels are much more likely to be moved about in the abdomen with lots more blood vessels requiring tying off. The bitch would have to cope with recovering from all this as well as attempting to nurse her litter. If it was me I would wait 3 months.
My vet will not do both at the same time, it means keeping the bitch under a GA for longer than they like

I had this sone with a bitch that was due to be spayed after her dlast litter, and we had no problems whatsoever. The Vet did say it depended on how long the C section took (it was a small litter of four) as to whether he would attempt it.
I prefered that to having to major ops and GA's within three months.
We have had a bitch spayed at the same time as having a caesarean. We had no plans to breed the bitch again and would have had her spayed at some point anyway.
She was carrying a large litter (10) and the vet said it was easier to get the puppies out quickly as he didn't have to worry about keeping the uterus intact.
The bitch was fine and was licking the puppies clean before we left the surgery. She was happy to feed them as soon as we arrived home, just an hour or so after the op.

A big thankyou to all of you for your promt replies, they are a great help.

I agree totally with Isabel.
Although I do know of bitches that have been spayed at the time of a C/S due to a ruptured uterus & have been fine.
i have a question... My step moms Dog (yorkie) was caught with our male dog, and she took her to get fixed 2 days later. But my step mom thinks shes pregnant. I didnt think she could have puppys if she was pregnant and then got Spayed. But im not sure...

If your step mums bitch was spayed shortly after mating, she can't be having puppies.

If the bitch was spayed the vet will have surgically removed her ovaries and uterus, so there's no way she can be pregnant. As she was spayed during a season, though, she may well be having a phantom pregnancy as the hormone level will have been suddenly upset.
