Been in and out of hospital in the last week for checks for abdominal pains which the midwives were concerned about. Baby was monitored for a good half hour and all fine on Tuesday. Usual checks done. Sent home. Got worse this weekend so rang the delivery ward and then had to go through the rigmarole of ringing the emergency GP number, explaining the history and asking for some antibiotics for the problem (as instructed by midwives).

Was then referred to the emergency GP in the local town as I am allergic to penicilling and the new "paramedics (!)" they send out don't carry the right stuff. Got appt straight away at 8pm.

Met emergency GP. He checked my stomach and proceeded to put the fear of god in me by telling me that in his opinion the height of the baby so far only corresponded to 20 weeks growth (I am 28!) and in his opinion baby had stopped growing. He then got his trumpet out and couldn't get a heartbeat - which furrowed his brow even further - and then went off to ring the hospital where I clearly overheard him discussing how I am "small for dates, relating to 20 weeks, he couldn't find a heartbeat and although I "claim" I can feel baby kicking he thinks its doubtful at this stage....".

Luckily, the delivery ward got me to go straight in where I was measured @ 28 weeks. Heartbeat absolutely fine and strong. Bloods taken and everything else checked and I was finally given the antibiotics at 12 o'clock last night!

I cannot praise the midwives and the hospital gynie docs enough - they are fantastic and very reassuring. But for that hour between seeing the GP and them I don't mind admitting I was absolutely worried to bits. And for what - an incompetant doctor who even had the nerve to say "I'd love to be proven wrong, but its unlikely". He never ONCE asked if I felt everything was ok (this is my 3rd!) and that was the very first question my midwife asked. It wasn't the fact that he felt he had to refer me to be checked - thats fair enough - but how could he get it so wrong!

Horrible experience.

This sort of thing really riles me - doctors who think they are omnipetent and try and scare the c**p out of mothers!!   You are an experienced, self-confident mother of two already - what would this sort of thing do to a young teenager who is having a first baby?   I experienced this sort of thing with my second baby, all those years ago, and had hoped that it was a thing of the past - I really do think that some male doctors get their rocks off by frightening pregnant women!

I'm glad that everything is ok - maybe its time for you to slow down - just a teensy, weensy bit???

Just wish I could help.

Regards

Margot

Hi chloeh
Must have been terrible for you, i agree bloody stupid doctors. when i had my 3rd and wasnt that far off delivering i said my midwife that i think somthing is wrong as i could feel this pulling sensation, she was really good. it ended up that the cord was around his neck twice, but i think she new what i ment as she had everything and one ready, never seen so many in the room lol. The thing is you no your own body and some just take no notice of what you say.
Hope you are feeling less stressful now? Try and relax with a good book, not a weepy one though lol.
My sister just had her 4th baby at the age of 40 siily girl, we were all a bit worried for her, She also opted for a home birth, that made my mum even more worried.
Everything went well though, as we got through her door all we heard was the baby crying lol. was just born then.
Keep us posted on your news
Take care

Good grief, you must have been worried half to death, woman! That's awful! Why on earth didn't he take notice of what you said? After all, you've had more babies than he has!

Glad everything's well though. *Puts on interfering old biddy hat* Should you be resting more, do you think?

Thanks all :) Am feeling more relaxed today and antibiotics seem to be kicking in - which is certainly helping! Am definitely trying to slow down now - have stopped riding and stopped travelling with work and the horses are all living out and happy on a low maintenance summer :D In the same token though I feel I need to stay as fit and active as possible because once I really slow down I won't start up again :D Am giving up work at the end of June with 4 weeks to go - and only working from home between now and then.

Am still savage bout the doctor though, and the worse thing is that it has planted a teeny seed of doubt - despite baby doing somersaults and big kicks all night and merrily keeping me awake even more :D :D

Stick with YOUR instinct - it is YOUR body, YOUR baby - and YOU are the expert here - just don't forget that!  You know what is "right" and what is "wrong" with your body - just as you do with your horses and dogs.   Of course, you take any doubts to the doctor/midwife - but try & stick with your own doctor/midwife :D

Just breathe deeply, practice relaxation, think calm thoughts.....:D :D :D

What a total dickhead . Just ignore the tw*t and go with your instincts which must be very strong at the present time.  Keep a cool head, remain calm, think gentle thoughts...."clear blue ocean", "clear blue ocean", "clear blue ocean"... :) :)

Glad to hear everything is well, when I was 31 weeks pregnant I had tummy pains, went to delivery suite told them, the doctor told me it was just braxton hicks........this was at 5.30am........I told them it was early labour, they said not a chance..........12.15pm, I was rushed to theatre for an emergency c-section as babies heart had stopped!!  Thank god after 6 weeks in special care she was fine, but if I had gone home like they told me to, it would have been a different story!

Glad you are ok Chloe. What a worry though. Bet he was just out of nappies himself ???

Glad everythings OK ChloesH - just ignore what that stupid Dr. said - I don't know why Drs. get involved with pregnancy and childbirth at all really.  When I was on my second, and mentioned I wanted a home delivery the Dr I saw told me that my baby was too large and if it got stuck during childbirth they would need to break its bones to get it out  :(.  He said I MUST have a cesarian before my due date.  I had so little faith in the Drs by then that although he TERRIFIED me with his story, I stuck to what I felt was right for my body and had my (10lb) baby naturally (although in hospital) 10 days late.  We were both fine.

Hope all goes well with you and your baby as I'm sure it will.

Hi,

Glad your feeling better Chloe.

I had to fight like hell to make sure I got my homebirth with 5th baby whose now 13 wks old.I had more update research and knowledge on the risk o=f heamorraging etc than the Trust or gp's thanks to AIMS.
With 2 business,4 dogs and 4 other children I definately had no choice but to saty active during the pregnancy, however it was my quickest and easiest birth of them all start to finish in less than hour and half so it pays to stay fit.I'll still showing the dogs at 8 months pregnant :-)
The good thing was I never had to see a doctor throughout the pregnancy all my care was done by midwives apart from once when i fellover at 7 months.
For me personally don't like giving birth in hosp have more faith and trust in midwives delivering at home where i feel less risk of complications, infections, stress and i have the undivided attention of 2 senior midwives purely on me and my baby therefore relax better to me equals less pain quicker easier birth.

I hope you continue rest of your pregnacy well i bet your other 2 are excited about the new baby ?

Briony :-)

Thanks everyone :) I feel much better now and I am just putting it down to being one of those things. Seeing the midwife tomorrow so that will be more reassurance :) Luckily, I know in my own mind that this pregnancy is progressing normally - but even so, had I not been seen straightaway at the hospital I would not have coped well at all with that on my mind!

Other 2 are fairly excited bout the new baby - but its not a reality yet. Mollie is coming up 11 and she's been there done it with Zack  and Zack is quite switched off to it until the baby is born.

I've been told its a boy - so I am still thinking of baby names. We like Sebastian (Seb), Seth and Isaac - but my mum is not impressed LOL - any thoughts on any of those? Are they a bit far out do you think? :)

Not knowing your surname makes a difference - my niece knows a man called Michael Hunt. A nice enough name you might think - but not when 'Mike Hunt' is paged over the tannoy ...
