How do you do it? Henry just has not got a clue. I've tried using a treat and physically rolling him over but he just flops to one side and he's bloody heavy to move!
Come on all you tricksters can you help??? :-)

Key assumption - you can get your dog into the down.
If he is in the sphinx position, using a bit of food luring from his nose to his elbow should get him on one hip.
Using the food again using food lure him into the flat by moving hand towards head.
Then, in incremental steps, use food to lure his head over, and gradually, step by step C &T for his front legs then his whole body going over.
Eventually he will be able to go down and roll over on one command..........

start this move with your dog in the down lying on one side use a treat and encourage your dog to follow it so that he rolls over on to his other side use the treat and encourage your dog to follow it he should then roll over onto his back he is rewarded when he rolls back into the down position. good luck
after your accomplished this you can do the leg weave... reverse throught the legs.....walking backwards ...good luck

also remember that some dogs are reluctant to roll over on a hard surface... maybe try it on carpet first?
I used the method of luring with treats, starting with a down and then luring him onto his side and treat. Gradually I took it further until he was rolled over on to his back. The important thing is to time the rewards well, let the treat go even if he hasn't done the roll over fully, but is heading towards it, as he's making an effort to understand and do what you want :)

Mission failed guys....
He just goes mad after the treat and starts doing anything to get it. He gives me his paw, he gives me his 2 paws, he sits, he lies down again, he gets into heelwork position he basically goes through his whole repatoir to get the bloomin treat. ha ha
Back to it later for round 2!

keep at it! I've just taught my Opi to roll over, and it's only taken me 2 years - and I still can't get Remy to do it!
I did have the advantage that she likes to sleep on her back anyway, so it's not an unusual position for her :)
I used the method outlined above, C&T for each step further than the last - if you try to get him to roll over in one go first time it won't work, but if you're patient enough you will get there. Don't add the command till he's rolling right over though - otherwise he may learn that "roll over" means lie on his side, or look over his shoulder, not do the whole roll. I still have problems with Opi just like you have - she'll have a blank few moments where she ignores what I'm telling her to do, and she'll stand on her back legs, wave her paw at me, speak and grumble, and lie down all to get a treat - when all I want is a sit!
good luck!
I know how you feel ladmad, my dog can do most basic commands but we try roll over and it all goes to pot i have given up for the time being, good luck.
Hi,
Maybe I have just been really lucky but rolling over was much easier to teach my two labs than getting them to stand! Again, as advised before they were always in the down position first with lots of treats in my hand. I got down on my knees on the carpet with them, rolled them onto their sides gently, treated and praised, then continued to roll them over with the treats in my hand so that their heads are following the treats. They both learned this trick after only 4 or 5 tries as they realised they had to go all the way over to get the treat. Forgot to add that as they went all they way over I then said the command "roll over", and as they knew I had treats in my hand they watch my hand and I make a twirling motion with my hand as I say the command.
If only someone could help me to get them to stand still for showing then I would be happy...lol

flynn learnt how to bow in about two seconds but took him TWO years to give paw!!
TWo years! But he's a border collie!!
My wheaten Dougal was the opposite it took him two second to learn paw by me hold a treat it my closed hand and just letting he do his thing till he gave paw and then I gave the treat. By bowing....well he has no idea!!!! :D

I was so pleased when i taught my pup to roll over at 9 and a half weeks, but i cant get him to do it, no matter how many times i try, to do it without the hand signals and just the words, but every time i go into th kitchin to get a treat to start a traing session, he automatically lys down and rolls form side to side hoping for the treat!, the softie. lol

My dog was born being able to role, not wquite on command, she just needs some fox or cow poo and she'll do it every time :D
Sorry for the flippant reply but if I don't joke about t I'll go mad.

LOL @ Robert! :D
