Topic Dog Boards / General / how long should [sheltie]puppy walks be?
- By zed [gb] Date 06.05.05 20:46 UTC
after having jack russells and older dogs before, i'm a little unsure how to start off puppy walking my sheltie pup when she is 11 weeks old next week after having all her jabs.
what would you say was sensible to start and how would i build it up? i intend to do a combination of pavement walking and walks/runs on grass/beach using her flexilead.
thanks.....

I will leave answering your question to someone who knows more about Shelties, but as you have had JR's before perhaps you can help me.
How much exercise did you give them as a pup.  I have a 16 week old one that I take out for approx 15 mins 3 times a day at the moment, but he loves it so much when we turn for home he doesn't want to go he wants to stay out.  I have to force him back indoors then he flies round the garden at 100 mph for about 20 mins full of energy and I think if he can be doing that in the garden couldn't he have done it on his walk.  Whats the difference, its all exercise.

The rule of thumb for any breed is 5 minutes per month of life so at 3 months old your pup should e getting 15 minutes a day etc.

Just pavement walking to start with. No off lead running on beaches or parks just yet. Also only short walks three times a day of about ten minutes each time. This will get your pup used to traffic people etc. they will all want to speak to him so it will take you ages to do ten minutes :-) and start him on the right road to lead walking and not pulling, also sitting at kerbs etc. Gradually build the time up to when he is about 9 months of age. Then he can go off lead but only if you have a sound recall, which is taught inside the house and garden to start with. All puppies have a mad run round, it is usually a build up of protein which is why you must be careful how much protein is in the food that is fed, not because they need extra exercise. As you say he gets that by running madly round the garden or in the house doing 360's as we have always called it.:-) Hope this helps. :-)
