Hello

Im getting a puppy in just over a week, and am going to have him in out room in his crate, question is, if he cries during the night to go out, do we take him out to toliet, or ignore him?

Your puppy will need to go out to relieve himself during the night. I suggest you buy yourself a copy of the 'Perfect Puppy' by Gwen Bailey, you'll find it invaluable :)

Hi There

We didnt take ours out during the night, mainly because we wouldnt be able to see him in the garden and we didnt want to be on our hands and knees at 3am!!

We put newspaper down for ours and by the time he was about 10 weeks he had got the hang of using it. A young puppy probably wont cry to go out to the garden anyway as they dont associate it with going to the loo. If he cried it will be for a cuddle and a little comfort as he will be missing the warmth of his litter.

Good Luck xx

We took our puppy out in the garden during the night. It depends on your circumstances, no good if you have can't see him like Caroline. We live in a bungalow so it was a case of soon as the tell tale scratch at door it was one mad dash to turn off alarm and out the door. It was then put him straight back in his bed with no talking to him. It was hard work at the time but the good thing was we didn't have to go through it all again to come off the newspaper. Although it feels like ages, it isn't too long before they can hold on through the night.
I can't say about using a crate, but I'm sure there is advise out there.
What are you getting. Let us know how you get on.
Regards
Deb

I did the same as Caroline, the newspaper. My pup is 12 weeks now and is on, the whole, dry through the night. I still put his paper down as some evenings he refuses to wee outside if it is too cold! He just looks at me then runs in the house, little rascal. This is getting rarer and rarer now and this last 2 weeks we have only had 1 wee on the newspaper.

May not work for everyone but works for me and he is completely house trained in the day now, he asks to go out everytime and if I go out for a while he always waits till I get back (not left him for more than 2 hours yet). Good luck with your new puppy:-)

We got up in the night to let ours out as pups. Pup cries, leap out of bed, scoop up pup, down the stairs, out the front door, pup performs, praise pup to the heavens, scoop up pup, back up stairs, put pup in its' bed, fall back into bed :D  Sounds horrendous, but it honestly doesn't take long for the pup to be able to hold on through the night.  Good luck with whichever method you choose :)
