Topic Other Boards / Foo / USB Ports on computer.

Could anyone with Broadband tell me what it is that needs to be plugged into the USB port of your computer to make it work?   Our computer has 3 ports (2 at the front and 1 in the back of the tower) but my son has broken the two in the front by pushing his web cam and MP3 player in and now we are down to just the one at the back that I plug my camera in.  We have bought one of those port extensions so that I can put my camera in and still have 3 left on the extension but I wondered if whatever has to be plugged into the USB Port would plug into the extension or would it have to be plugged directly into the computer port which means I won't be able to plug my camera in without plugging the broadband thingy out.  Hope this makes a bit of sense :-)

I think they all work from the extension ( as long as it is plugged in ;-) )  Because they are hardware the PC finds them..

PS I think ;-))) LOL

What exactly is it that the internet provider sends that you have to plug into the USB port?  Is it big or small?

Anna they send you a modem -which is the size of a small rat lol and this plugs into the back of your pc via the usb port ( mine won't work btw via a hub extender ) and the modem also plugs into your telephone line ..ooh and a couple of filters for your phone lines

It depends how much power the modem uses i dont think the one i had worked with a hub, although you can buy hubs that have extrernal power adaptors which are supposed to be able to handle more high powered stuff

Thanks everyone :-)  Looks like we had better try and get new USB port hubs put into our tower then if it might not work via a adaptor.  Thats if they can be replaced :-)  Only thing is I will be without my computer, how on earth will I manage without my daily fix of Champdogs :-(

Another way to connect broadband is via a network card.
This method (which i use myself) does not use as much resources so you have more available memory to use for other programs. I found when i connected by usb my pc was a little slower than it is now, so another great reason. It also benifits you as you do not need to use another usb port and you can go wireless if you want to buy the extra equipment

I don't know, wireless is quite easy to set up, I've done mine, I have two desktops and my laptop running on a wireless connection with no problems!  I'm on Blueyonder Broadband too, the 4MB connection, but my broadband modem would plug into my LAN socket, not USB if I didn't use the wireless connection.
