Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / 14 week old malamute puppy how do I get
- By jueyc [gb] Date 05.05.05 11:10 UTC
Hi
Please can someone give me some advise on getting my malamute to poo and wee outside. She is so good she goes on newspapers near the door all the time, but I cannot get her to go outside at all. We go for long walks, I stay outside with her for ages, she has weed a couple of times and I have praised her and given treats outside. But she still insists on coming back into to poo and wee. I have tried for over a week now going out after meals and doing all things advised. We even went on a 2 hour walk, stoping and starting to try but she still would not do anything. As soon as we got back in she did it on her newspapers. PLEASE HELP DESPERATE.

She's a clever girl - she's learned that it's acceptable to wee on paper, so you now have to retrain her that it isn't. So I'd take up all the newspaper so that she can't use it, and carry on taking her outside after every meal, play, sleep etc, and at least once an hour when she's awake, and stay with her.

Many pups are far too uncertain of the big scary world that they'd rather explode than draw other dogs' attention to themselves by leaving their scent anywhere than 'their' territory; the confidence to do that often comes much later - sometimes not even by 6 months. At least you're not having to clear up after her on walks yet!  So not only are such long walks potentially bad for her joints they're also likely to be making her feel more wary outside her garden. Little and often is the key!

She's still very much a baby - don't expect her to be reliably housetrained for several months yet. Good luck.

Hi there :)

Mallies are very quick to learn where they can pee and poo , unfortunately your pup has just learnt the wrong place :) I would remove the paper all together as they are just confusing the issue. Start over again, taking her out every 15-30 minutes and praising when she does something.

Don't worry about the not peeing on a walk thing...LOTS of dogs won't go whilst they are out. One way of combatting this is to say a certain word when you take her into the garden ..this way she will get trained to pee on command almost ..we always tell pups to 'Hurry Up!' but it can be anything you like, just repeat it until she pees and THEN praise a lot. Gradually you will be able to use that same word when you are out on a walk and she will *go*

As JG says, she should NOT be going on 2 hour walks at 14 weeks. Try to follow the 5 minute per month rule. She should be having 2 or 3 walks of about 15 minutes each :)

Email me if you have any questions or I can help in any other way :)

hi jueyc
i too have a 14 wk mal, mines a boy. just wanted to agree with melody they are smart and will soon get the hang of it, although i started taking Kai out straight away (didnt use paper) from 8wks and now he's askin to go out, he stands by the back door which is good. still get the odd puddle now and again during the day :-)

My problem was through the nite when Kai is in his crate, he kept peeing and then whinning to wake me to go for a poo, but i think he has cottoned on now that if he gives a little whine before hand i will take him out for pee and poo, we are getting more dry crates on a morning now :-)

You could also move the poo and put it outside where you want her to go, then when she smells it out there she may go where it is. :-)

Thank you all for you help. I will try your suggestions. Please dont worry about the long walk it was only the once and she was carried alot of the way, I do understand that it is not good for her joints our vet has gone over points as to why not too. Thank you all again it has been very helpful. I will keep in touch with Echo's progress.
