I have a new addition to my family in the form of the most beautiful Italian Spinone bitch puppy.  I am interested in showing her, but do not have a clue where to start.  As a complete novice I do not understand the different classes that she may or may not be eligable for, and what paperwork would be involved.  I hope to attend ring craft classes (she is not yet old enough to go out!) but I really need help and advice from those of you who have the knowledge and experience to give me help and guidance.

Hi Guest, what an adventure you're about to embark upon. :)

First of all your puppy must be registered with the Kennel Club, and you should transfer the registration into your name. Then ask your newsagent to order you a copy of either 'Our Dogs' or 'Dog World', these two publications are weekly and are a must for show goers.

Your puppy cannot be shown until she's six calendar months old, so you'll have loads of time to do some ring training. If you are an absolute beginner, then I would advise you to go to some shows that have Italian Spinone classes, and watch very carefully how the breed is handled, what kind of lead is used for them and get chatting to the owners (after they have been in the ring, not just as they are about to go in).

Could your pups breeder perhaps guide and support a bit while you get started?

Please join Champdogs, we'll be happy to help you any time.

Good luck,

Dawn R.

Awww wow you have an Italian spinone!!! :D I handle a white and orange spin for a breeder that we know. I would be great if you could join as I would love to hear more about your puppy.  Like dawn said the best way to learn how to handle the breed is to go and watch people handling. If you click here http://www.dog.biz/wanting-to-show.htm it will tell you a little bit about starting to show. Before you take your puppy, go to some different ringcraft classes and see which one you like. Talk to the trainers and see what their methods are. But most importantly join champdogs! :D this way everyone can help you and answer any questions that you have (it is also free and very quick to join) Plus I would love to hear a bit more about your spinone. Hope to talk to you soon

You could also try one or two companions shows as well as ringcraft to get her used to things.  However, the level of showing varies but usually you will find a good number of dogs and handlers from which you can watch and learn as well.

There is a breed club championship show on the 12/6/05 at the Tomlinsons Canine Centre, Upper Grange Farm, Ratby Lane,Markfield, Leic. LE67 9RJ. Go along to watch, don`t take your puppy though as only dogs entered are allowed within the precincts of the show. The judging starts at 10am.
Attending a few shows where Spinone are being shown you`ll be able to watch how they are exhibited, how to stand them, at what pace to move etc. for when you take your puppy to ringcraft classes, then you will have some idea at least what to do.Be warned it can be very addictive!
