We have just bought some new garden furniture (which is covered in plastic at the moment), my dog goes straight onto the patio and cocks his leg up the plastic. Can anyone recommend something to put onto it to stop this. The furniture is wood and I am worried about unwrapping it incase he cocks his leg up, he is just the height for it to go straight over the seat, plus also the smell is not very good.
Thank you.

I think I'm right in saying plastic contains urea, so it may be the plastic that's attracting him to mark. Washing down with a solution of bio washing powder, then spraying with white spirit or white wine vinegar will break down the fatty acids that hold the smell and encourage him to keep remarking....... Going out with him and distracting him when you see him start to sniff will also help to break the habit.

You may not be aboe to stop himn marking the outside furniture though so keep it somethwre he doesn't have access to unless supervised. After all it is outside and it is wood, so in his mind fair game :D Now I know why I don't keep male dogs :D Mind the one I own jointly is coming to stay until SKC, and I do love him dearly!

Follow him outside and tell him "no" when he starts to lift his leg against the patio furniture. Better still, if it's possible I would make the entire patio area a "no pee zone". Escort him off the patio and praise him and give him a treat when he pees or poops elsewhere.
I do not know about pee warping wood, but I'm sure it could make it smell terrible. My dog peed against one of my terracotta patio pots and it took months for the smell to go away. (He also created 8 huge brown, dead spots in my buxus topiary globes.)

I can attest to pee making the wood smell terrible hence why I go ballistic when morons allow their dogs to lift their legs on gates and fences. Smells like a public urinal in the summer.
There is no need to allow dogs to do this. They should be on the lead and the owners do not have to stop.
I bet if a bloke unzipped his trousers and urinated up their fence/gate the owners would be apoplectic!

Agree entirely. aany time I ahve had charge of a male dog I ahve never allowed them to do this. I would wait until we found a tree on grass.

Dogs peeing on fences? Can't possibly be as bad as the human that vomited in my garden one night and justified it by saying "at least it wasn't on the path". Yuk (even worse, the dog tried to eat it. Double Yuk).

My dog will not cock his leg in my garden - he does do it outside of the house but he will either squat or half lift his leg but its when he is on the patio etc so it never goes up anything. He is the first dog I have owned (always had bitches) so I am not sure about all males but it could well be the plastic that is making him mark. Does he normally cock his leg in your garden?
