Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Dog wants human food

We recently 'adopted' a 5 year old female dog who was spoilt in her previous home, she was given tidbits of human food a lot and also lots of dog treats. We dont believe in giving dogs human food. Everytime we eat, the dog starts to tremble/shake and sort of whines and stares at us the whole time we are eating, because she wants the food. How can we stop her from doing this?

I suggest you put her in another room while you eat.

I agree with putting your dog in another room while your eating :)

I am very perplexed about what you said about "dont believe in giving human food"

Why not!!!!

Fresh meat, vegies, fruit, the odd scrap of meat from your plate is only beneficial to dogs. Vets worry about the people who only give their dogs the fatty carb filled table scraps! I'm assuming you heard this fallacy from your vet?

Why dont you join? I would be very interested in hearing why you dont believe in giving dogs human or should i say fresh foods :)
I personally dont "believe" in giving a dog a bowl of dry food for breakfast, lunch and tea for the rest of it's life, this is much more harmful than giving "human" food In my opinion :)

Lots of people keep 'human' food and 'dog' food separate, Frodo. :) No harm in that. Humans eat lots of things that are inappropriate for dogs. :)

Table scraps are fine, but to avoid scrounging at mealtimes what's vital is never to give a dog food directly from a human's plate - always scrape scraps into the dog's dish and give it at the dog's normal mealtime as a replacement of part of its normal meal. However this dog's already learned to scrounge, so putting it in another room is the best method of prevention.

Which part of JG post do you agree with tohme?

I would have thought you would be all for giving dogs human food since you are a raw feeder who i assume feeds their dogs human grade meat etc :)

I 100% agree with not feeding dogs from the table, once this is started they will never leave you alone when your trying to eat! I know, i've got a dog like this !

putting her in another room whilst you eat.

the OP was concerned about the staring and whining not the relative merits of human food v dog food, that is a whole different debate.

Agree agree agree Frodo.  Don't start sneaking titbits under the table or else everytime you even rustle a crisp packet or open the biscuit tin the dog will expect a bit.  And moan its head off when it gets nothing!  Been there, living it every day :) (and my own fault!).
