Hi
Did not think there were any in this country, but they were created using the ancestors of the Boxer, English Mastiff and Bull Mastiff that were imported to South Africa. They reach up to about 28in tall and weigh up to about 160lb. They can be yellow/brindle, grey, red/brown or brown in colour, and they have a docked tail. They were bred as defense dogs.Hope this helps
Dawn.

I have a friend here who comes from South Africa .
He says they are bred from the irish Wolfhound the english Mastiff the Bullmastiff and Boxer. They are bred to kill wild pigs that are apparently very dangerous , He says they are deadly for the purpose they were bred ,but are making good family dogs as well and are very loyal to their master. Mari

- By digger [gb] Date 26.05.02 10:39 UTC
The email re Boerboel has been sent to many posters on other boards I post to............
- By labfan [gb] Date 26.05.02 11:43 UTC
thanks everyone why do u think they are banned?is it because of the fact they where bred to fight boars or oter reasons temperamentfor example? also are they trustworthy with children and other animals i am quite keen as i have had rottiesin the past
- By dizzy [gb] Date 26.05.02 15:00 UTC
why not a rottie this time then? i thought by your board name you must be into labs :D, ive seen pics of the breed hunting alongside water, they reminded me of a heavy built boxer,
- By labfan [gb] Date 26.05.02 22:46 UTC
i am a labfan u cant beat them! the reason I don't choose a rottie this time is because it was very traumatic when i lost my 13yr old bitch 2 yrs ago that i tend to compare every rottie to her and have not found anything like her!! my partner got me into labs but its not quite the same as having your own dog friend

WHat is this rubbish about the South African Boeboel being banned in the UK. The banned breeds are American Pit Bull Terrier and any descendants or crosses which is why Amstaffs are illegal and Americna Bulldogs are on close watch by the police and RSPCA, Fila Brasilero(Brazilian Mastiff), Dogo Argentino(Argentine Mastiff) and Tosa Inu the massive Japanese fighter. South African Boerboels are basically large more athletic bullmastiffs that were used to defend the Afrikans people in the outback in South Africa and now from all the crime in South Africa, there is a breeder in this country who is starting up I think he is in North Wales near Snowdonia he's somewhere up there. Nothing in them though you can't get in another dog and bullmstiffs are cuter dogs. If you want a heavy mastiff get a large male Neapolitan although a boxer would be excellent as you have children.

american bulldogs are not on close watch by cops and rspca, there not even on the dda list, ilooked it up
- By issysmum [gb] Date 27.05.02 16:23 UTC
If the RSPCA is aware of them and the Inspector has the time they closely watch any dog that is capable of fighting. It is often injuries sustained by these dogs that is the first sign of dog fighting in the area.

I don't mean they are on DDA act if they were then they would be illegal full stop, but people are importing them and dogfighters are pruchasing them to cross them with staffie bull terriers and bull terriers to make artificial pit bulls and it is worrying both the police due to people creating htem as attack dogs and the RSPCA read the articles on I think the BBC news site look it up on google.

wheres over here, ??????????as theyre not banned in the usa
- By donnamwilliams1 [gb] Date 29.05.02 10:41 UTC
Yep, I know these dogs - I come from South Africa - the threads posted here are correct, bred for protection and can be very vicious, I personally would not recommend this dog to people with childeren, they are very unpredictable and very heavy.

Hi Labfan

I have just come seen your message and have also read the replies from various people. I have a South African Mastiff who is now 6 and a half months old and a wonderful dog. They are not a band dog in this country, but as you said previously they are very rare. My breeder told me that until there are a certain number of this breed in the UK, they will not be recognised as a breed.

Rocco is very good with my 5 year old son, the only problems that we do encounter are purely because of Rocco's size and weight. He loves to play and tends to knock my son over quite alot.

I researched these dogs very carefully before I purchased one and would have not hesitations in recommending them to anyone looking for a large breed dog.

How can you recommened a breed when you have only experianced one dog, a 6 month old pup. At least wait until he his fully mature, about 3 1/2 years, before telling people about the temperment of the breed and even then it will only be of one animal. Jackie

Could not agree more Jackie!

Seems strange that two old threads, both on contentious subjects should both be resurrected within a day of each other! Could just be my suspicious nature!

Probably not John, for all my years I'm still gullable, take people at face value. Still there is always the amber stuff to turn to, that never lets you down. Ja:)kie

I've only just found this thread, and had to put a post in even if I'm really really late, as it's still searchable on the Net.
Most of the info on here as as best scketchy and not very well reasearched.

If anyone reading this truly wants to find out abou the breed, visit the Boerboel Club website
www.boerboelclub.co.uk

And people can alway visit me and my adult dogs!

I've met one and i thought he was absolutely gorgeous!
- By ukboerboel [gb] Date 10.12.04 10:35 UTC
That's great, that he made a good impression, did you find any similarities to what's written on this thread??

I bet not!

What was the dogs name?

Lynne
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 10.12.04 21:55 UTC
I don't know how to spell it, but it sounded lik chigani, apparently its a south african word for something. (One of the owners came from south africa and knew what they were doing when they bought him.) He's only quite young but i found him absolutely gorgeous. WHen he was a pup he used to just lay down looking at everything, (I'm told this is similar to their stalking behaviour?) and was so difficult to get moving. It seems hard to imagine him being aggressive.
- By ukboerboel [gb] Date 11.12.04 15:31 UTC
Hi,
Yes I met Chigani last month at the Boerboel Appraisal held in Bridgend!
He has his own web site too!

And if you're wondering what on earth a Boerboel appraisal is....
In order to obtain papers for any pups bred, firstly both parents must be evaluated (Appraised) by a qualified judge, and score 75% or more. You could call it a quality control check!

I live in South Africa, but am British. We did own a Boerboel, but it attacked my 13yr old brother, badly. It was not a bad dog, very friendly, loyal, used to sit on our laps and we reared him from a pup. We can't understand what happened, this sudden viscious attack for no reason. He did not provoke the dog, and we took it to the vet to see if it was mentally affected, but it was not.

I cannot therefore honeslty reccomend this breed to anyone
The dog in question has been given to a farmer and is ebjoying life on a farm, even though he gave scars to my brother- face and all we could not see him be put down.

www.boerboel.ca- for info

He was the most princely gorgeous dog ever and we all loved him lots as he did us. But i would deem them unpredictable and unsafe from personal experience.
