At the moment we are on Wanadoo dial up at home but it is a nuisance because it is frequently cutting us off and we have to dial up again.  We want to get broadband (with Wanadoo) and I have just been looking at the Wanadoo page and it has 3 Broadband packages.  I was thinking of going for the active user package which is £22.99 a month.  It also says that you can have wireless broadband for an extra £4 a month and connect another computer up to the internet which would be handy as my daughter has a computer in her bedroom and the internet would be helpful for her and my son to do their homework on.  My question is what does Wireless broadband mean (I know I'm being a bit thick here, but I don't understand all these things) and if I get it what else do I need to connect my daughters computer to the internet because I haven't a clue how to do it.

I'm with Wanadoo and use the £17.99 a mth package as I don't download films or songs or much other stuff just my email so I can use it for the full 8 hrs a day and not worry about my download limit.

I also have a wireless system so have a router on my pc down here which is connect to the telephone line but also my daughter can access the net at the same time as me without a telephone line as she gets her connection via a dongel (sp?) that picks up the wireless signal from the router down here.  I don't have to be online for her to use it either as the router stays connected all the time basically in a mutli net using household it makes for an easy life as we can all be online doing different things at the same time and the phone will still ring.  My eldest also comes and uses a Dongal on her laptop so she can sit watching tv and doing her research online lazy mare lol.

Hi Schip,

Thanks for your reply.  No we don't download songs or anything but I do use the email quite a lot and as there are four of us using the internet we do probably use it more than 8 hours a day so thats why I thought that the Active user package would be better for us.  It says active is 6GB a month (although I haven't a clue what this means) and the standard is up to 2GB a month.

Regarding the wireless connection it says that they provide a livebox but I would need to have a spare touch tone telephone to plug the livebox into.  I still don't understand what else I would need to buy to connect my daughter to the internet though.  How much are routers and dongals then and would we need both of these?  Sorry for all these questions but the internet baffles me =

I imagine their wireless package gives you a wireless router which is what connects you to the internet - you may then need to buy or they may provide a wireless network card for the computer upstairs - then the computer upstairs will connect through the router.

Not sure if there is a particular reason for you wanting to stay with wanadoo but AOL do umlimited broadband for £17.99 per month - which means no download limits or for £24.99 a month they do 1mb which is double the speed of normal broadband - they do free setup and include the modem etc for free

AOL used to be annoying for dialup for the same reason that they disconnected all the time but we have had their broadband for a few years and never had a problem

Thanks for your reply Jo.  I thought I would stay with Wanadoo for now just to make the changeover smoother (no cancelling the payment and changing it over etc)  I have been quite happy with their anytime package (except for the frequent cutting off, but we do use it quite a lot so I suppose we can't complain)   Wanadoo does the 1MBPS for £17.99 a month.  When you go with AOL is it a 12 month contract or can you cancel if you don't like it?

Hi Anna

We used to have the wanadoo dial-up and switched to the heavy user for wanadoo broadband, it's great, we do use it a lot but are looking at the £17.99 or £22.99, but we do download quite a lot so don't know if we'll be ok using this or not! We are looking into it tho.

If your considering changing ntl have just revised their packages and now 1mb is £17.99 pm 2mb is £24.99 pm and 3mb is £37.99 pm, Yes they are capping like everyone else but you get more surf time than most others

As for wireless you can do it yourself for a one off payment for the equipment all you need a a router and a wireless network card. It will cost about £80 - £100 for this from any pc shop. If you cable it to your main pc where the broadband is situated via a normal network card (£10 approx) then just put a wireless one on your daughters (£20 approx) you will save more money and remember its yours to keep so if you change providers then you will still be wireless with the new one and it will save you £4 per month which works out to £48 per year so after 1 & 1/2 years you would of paid for the equipment anyway

Tiscali have a very good deal on Broadband for medium/heavy users - £15.99 a month and free phonecalls at weekends.

AOL is a 12 month contract i think but the reason i find them good is that there is NO capping for their price - so i guess it depends what you use the internet for
