Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Lab pup trying to mate his bed!
- By Thompson1 [gb] Date 03.05.05 09:45 UTC
Hi guys

Just a quick question on behalf of a friend.  She has a 6mth old black lab who constantly trys to mate with his bed.  She has tried distracting him etc but still failing.  Has anyone got any sugestions or will he simply grow out of it?

Many Thanks

I haven't any suggestions, at the moment (posting quickly from work) - but it is quite usual, I can assure you!

My female dog used to do this with a jumper, all the time.  It was usually when she wasn't able to get her own way and this was her way of controlling something.  It was especially amusing as she IS a she!   She grew out of this as she matured a bit.  (However, I now have a male pup and he will gladly attempt to hump anything in the room!  - Entertainment for when guests arrive I s'pose!)

No it is not uncommon for a Lab to do this.  I have two of them.  They get there bedding or whatever is handy, my clothes, sofa thows etc,  bundle it all up underneath them, hold old with front paws corners of bedding in mouth, and let rip. :D  They do grow out of it to a certain extent, but they will take notions and begin again. Penny usually takes notions like this every few months and the period of behaviour will last for a few weeks and then stop again.  She has done this for the last 4 years and it does not upset her so I just let her get on with it.
