we have just aquired a wirehaired german pointer from a family who were going to have her put to sleep as she kept jumping the fence. it was never explained why nor did we ask why she was kept in the garden for her to jump the fence but we know now that she has a form of incontinence, she wets involuntarilly when she lays down and relaxes, this would never make us leave her in the garden but it is making my house and her very smelly, we are going to take her to the vet but are worried about the cost at the moment as she is not insured yet but we have to get this treated. are we talking operation or pills, she is six tears old and general anesthetics worry me. any advice would be greatly received. thank you

I would guess the first course of action would be Propalin drops, which are supposed to be very effective.

We have a six year old bitch(spayed) who suffers from mild incontinence, like as you describe, when she is relaxed she can leave a small wet patch behind. She has been on Propalin since January of last year, 0.7ml twice a day and this is, currently, keeping it under control.

One bottle costs around £20 and last for about 3 months so it doesn't work out very expensive, although our vet has warned us that surgery may need to be performed in the future if it gets worse and/or the propalin stops working. We have noticed that the dose is gradually increasing, I think she started on 0.4ml twice a day, and I don't think any long term medication is a good thing if it can be avoided.

We have heard kelp mentioned as an alternative so we may look into that as we would prefer her not to have a GA and a big op but if thats what it takes then so be it.

Hope this helps

Emily

Just out of interest, do you know how old she was when she was spayed?

yes she was 3 and a half after she was caught by a springer who jumped the fence and she had 10 pups
