
Hi Charlie, from your post it does sound like ear wax, sometimes in fungal infections, like Otitis externa which is very common in dogs, or parasitic ones for that matter, an awful lot of very dark wax is produced and the ear appears to be caked with it. I am not sure what cleaner you used but in my experience most loosen the wax, which is also very thick and you may not notice this until it comes out on the cotton wool. There is a chance that it could be blood also, due to self-trauma, but the only way to find the cause of this problem is to go to the vet where both ears can be examined and appropriate meds prescribed.
