I have a five month old Westie.  Who is totally paper trained except for the odd accident - but when she is taken out for a walk she doesnt do anything at all and as soon as we get back home she goes straight to the paper to relieve herself - regardless of how long we are out for.  I dont mind that she uses the paper even at her age - but how can i get her to go outside.

It is quite hard getting them to go outside.  After a meal or drink take her out and stand outside till she goes then give her loads of praise, then  they do catch on quite quick but it's catching the first time they do or waiting whats the hardest once you catch them , they realise where they should go just make sure you give her loads of praise.  Westies are very intelligent and catch onto things very quickly.  i hope this helps you a bit.

Your finding one of the disadvantages of 'paper training' - it adds another step to toilet training :(

The best way I've found to get over this hurdle is to take some soiled paper outside, weigh it down with a brick or stone, and then take the puppy outside to this spot every half an hour or so, after every meal when it wakes, after it's been busy playing, and when anything exciting happens - such as a visitor.  Reward profusely each time she perfomsout side , and remove the paper from inside the house.

Our lab we had when i was born (not saying which year lol) was paper trained and every time my dad took him over the park he would spend hours looking for a piece of paper to do his toilet needs :)
we had to put paper in garden too. havent got any answers for you sorry, but just too say your not alone.
MY shar-pei  is 18 mths old and still only does her big jobs in garden, she only wees went out on walks. still carry a bag just in case though :)

Other dogs I have had in the past took quite a while to go toilet out on walks. I think this is normal, they just wait to do it in the appropriate place at home. Makes cleaning up easier tho.
