HI

We have just mated our working English Springer Spaniel,  But have been told that you are not allowed to let them go into cold water as it will kill the pups.  As anyone who has a gundog it is hard to keep them out of water.  Does anyone know anything about this.

Thanks

Still swim my Spanish for the first 5 weeks of pregnancy, it's never done them any harm.  You need to be careful re the water though and make sure that it's safe.  If your dogs fit and active I'd continue what you usually do in moderation.  Took one of my Spanish to her first workig test when she was 5 weeks gone and she loved it and so did the pups first time ever that I've felt pups kick at 5 weeks and it's never happened since :d

Good luck on you pups :d

My working cocker bitch was pregnant this time last year and I was unable to keep her out of water throughout.  We pass a cattle trough on our walk and every day she climbs in.  It was no different throughout pregnancy.  She also swam in the river but I did make sure she was on a lead in the late stages when she was really porky!

I can't see there being a problem at this time of year when we don't get the very extremes of temperature.  It could be different in the winter.  I am always amazed that dogs don't notice the temperature of the water.
