Does anyone know of any good puppy training classes within the Grantham (Lincolnshire) area?

This lady is excellent, not sure how near to Grantham she is though
check out www.puppyschool.co.uk They are franchises that are run by people who have been trained by Gwen Bailey. Both of my pups went there and they were brilliant.

Thanks, I have emailed them. I'll keep you updated :-)
Have emailed a friend of mine who lives in Lincolnshire and asked her where she goes. The trainers are Marie and Gwen.
The telephone no. for the lady in Lincolnshire is 01472 851836 and ask for Gwen
The lady that runs classes at Ulceby Village Hall is Marie.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the number but I think it might be a bit far away. Ulceby is North Lincs and we are South, but again thanks anyway.
Most trainers take puppies up to 18 (at a stretch 20 depending on the puppy) weeks on puppy socialisation classes, then the puppies are moved up to basic training classes.
Classes should be small and the trainer experienced in holding such groups.

"Most trainers take puppies up to 18 (at a stretch 20 depending on the puppy) weeks on puppy socialisation classes, then the puppies are moved up to basic training classes."
This is far far too many - look for a class with less than 10 in it unless there are more trainers than 1 to 8 puppies.
With a class this size a trianer cannot possibly protect all the pups from bad experiences - socialisation must be full of good times.
I think the OP means that the puppies are up to 18-20 weeks old - not that there are this many in the class ;)

** Think you misread Sam. upto 18-20 weeks is the age not the numbers in class.
Futher down the message I did say (I think :) ) that class sizes should be small. I take 4 per class if indoors, 6 per class outdoors. Fixed 4 weeks then onward and upward to the next training class if they want to do that - many do.
Classes are a chance for pups of all breeds to socialise and also to get the start of basic training - sit, down, stand, short stay, recall etc. Owners are expected to carry on socialisation outside the class environment as well as carrying on the training :)
Classes should be fun and informal in a 'controlled' sort of way so that all the pups and the owners benefit from the experience

I have had someone recommended to me who has classes in Grantham. However, there is a training course starting on the 16 May and in their first email to me they said that this might be too soon as our puppy isn't having her first injection until Tuesday and that they were running another one starting at the end of June, but that the May one may be put back due to numbers. I replied thanking her but saying that I didn't really want to wait until the end of June but if the May one was delayed to let me know. They have now come back to me saying that if I sign up there will be enough numbers to start on 16 May and it would be fine for my dog to go so long as she has had both injections and is in good health and I carry her from the car to the building. I am now concerned that they just want the numbers to start the class and that this is not a good idea as I know you have to wait a certain amount of time after the second injection, but as she is my first puppy I would really appreciate any opinions on this as I know I could be worrying over nothing, but always best to ask those in the know!
Many thanks for any opinion on this.

Just a general question on puppy classes :) How common is it to have fixed length of courses ?? Where I go to training, you just keep going to the classes as long as you want and you are moved up a class when you/the dog are ready. A friend of mine in Scotland rescued a lab puppy and went to some local puppy classes. These have now finished and they have told her that she isn't ready for the next class up, but can't continue in the puppy classes as they are full of new puppies  How daft :( What is she supposed to do now ? Obviously she must continue training as best she can at home and hope that they will take her back at some stage :( This is her first dog (apart from family dogs)

Fixed length courses are fairly common - I did a fixed 6 week course with my bitch. I then changed to a new club with my dog (as we moved) and they had a system where you could turn up when you wanted for the puppy classes, there wasn't a fixed period of time - it was mainly when they felt your pup was too big/too good for that class (5 months old for my boy) that they moved you up into the beginners. I must say though I haven't come across a beginners class which wouldn't take a dog due to fact they weren't ready

I run fixed length classes (6 weeks) as it is up to the owner to continue the training and socialisation. No-one should rely on a class once a week to train and socialise your puppy. Most puppies after 6 weeks of training classes need a good time of home training and socialisation to consolidate the learning before they move on to advanced classes - remember they are only babies!

I don't think that my friend is relying on the classes for those purposes :) What she is relying on is support and advise. She is a very conscientious person who, I am sure, is continuing the training at home. I can't see the point of running fixed length classes and then nothing :)

I might be wrong Noodle, but if it were me I would think that as your pup will have had both vaccinations and all the other pups in the class the same, then she is asking you to carry your pup to and fro from the car to save it from anything it might pick up on the way, but that it would be safe once in doors as all the other pups/dogs would have been vaccinated also. If you see what I mean.
In our training classes we have new dogs coming in every week, and so we all move up at different times. Could you not join in next week?
maybe this is a bit late now as I've just seen the date on your post but never mind :)
