It's a natural dog behaviour, I'm afraid. You'll have to learn to live with it, or be quick off the mark at replacing the divots!

Do they do this after they've had a wee?

Both my dogs do this male/female after going to the toilet, but they NEVER to it in my backyard. It has got something to do with marking their territory, they have scent glands on their feet and it adds an extra oomph to the next dog that comes along!
This is why i guess they dont do it at home cos they dont feel the need to mark in their home.

I had a funny experience with this the other day,we were on a walk and we came accross this couple sitting on the grass with their little dog on their laps,my female then proceeded to do a full circle around them kicking the grass as she went, she never pee'd just kicked, talk about dominant! I was so embarrased, hope they managed to pick the grass out from between their teeth afterward :D :o I'm glad they found it funny!
