I have two dogs one pup and Sable who will be 4 this year. Sable doesnt have the nicest breath in the world which is due to tartar on her back teeth. I have been bad :-( and should have cleaned them myself. Now I have recently started BARFing my dogs  and am led to believe that eating the bones will clean their teeth. However they don't seem to chew the wings much and I have given a recreational bone of beef rib but wondered if I had Sables teeth cleaned by the vet would the then eating raw keep them clean or would I still need to clean them with a brush myself?

I feed raw and never have to clean teeth.

Recreational bones get the tartar off if there is any in the first place.

So if the bones get the tartar off I shouldn't need to pay out for teeth cleaning at the vets? That would be just great!

Give them marabones a few times a week to chew on this should keep their teeth clean

Thankyou I just understood from my vet that if I had her teeth cleaned I would need to then brush them myself.

I understand (from my dentist as well as the vet!) that once tartar has built up it damages the surface of the enamel making it rougher and the tartar reforms quicker than it would otherwise.

When we got Bramble from Battersea, his teeth were horrible. The vet suggested that they would need to be cleaned when he was neutered. We started giving him bones to chew and they cleaned his teeth up completely and six years later, he hasn't needed the 'dentist'.

I've got a bitch who is prone to tartar and at the age of 2 had horrible teeth.  We wanted her to have a litter but needed to get to grips with the problem before even considering it so we embarked on a regime of Logic Dental Gel, marrowbones and hide chews.  I also purchased a set of dental tools on eBay (£5 for a whole set!), NOT so I could perform minor surgery myself but to use the flat tools to flick the larger bits of hard brown scale off.  I only had to use the dental tools three times and within two months, her teeth had improved 90%.  She now has chicken wings and hard bones regularly and there hasn't be a recurrence of the problem.

That sounds more like my cup o tea :-)  no vet fee As they are eating raw anyway a couple extra bones a week shouldn't b a prob.

I think i should try marrow bones on my self, went to dentist yesturday and got taught by 20 yr old (me 45 ) how to clean my teeth because i miss the very back ones lol. :)

Do you use an electric toothbrush ? We got them for all the family some years ago and they certainly keep the teeth clean with the minimum of effort :)
