Hi, i was just wondering what you guys would class as a 'good pedigree'? for example in adverts and such it often states from a good pedigree. Is this to do with how many champs in bloodline? if so how many? I have a 4 mth rottie but he was brought as a pet with no intentions to show but i found his old breeders info which stated also from good pedigree. Or is it more a temperment thing? Sorry for being naive!

Hi Guest, the term 'good pedigree' will mean different things to different people. Most of the time it's a term used to promote a litter of puppies to buyers that don't really know a good pedigree from a bad one, but it sounds good doesn't it.

My own definition of a good pedigree is one where a high proportion of the dogs/bitches are well known consistently successful showdogs, that match well in type.

No doubt you'll get many other definitions too.

Field trial winners and award winners being another criteria breeders might use to define a "good Pedigree". Although I do think that most people would say they dog is from good lines and as it was mated to a dog from good lines therefore the pups are good too. I like to think of it as a pedigree which the breeder has put a lot of time and thought into, to produce a puppy which may have potential to win in the showring or on the working field.

To me a good pedigree would be one belonging to a puppy put together by a experienced, talented breeder but it would not necessarily be apparent to a "lay person" as it will often take another experienced breeder to appreciate how lines have been skillfully placed together.
I think this is rarely the "good pedigree" talked about in advertisements though :)
