I have had two freebies recently. I put them on at the same time - one read less than 4000 for the day - the other over 14000. I don't know whether they make better quality ones - but these are crap :D

One of mine was the Walker's one - the one that read over 14000 :D

I have a pedometer, and I found it fascinating to discover that on a day at work (desk-bound) I only clock up about 7000 steps, but on my days off I do about 20,000. So it averages out all right.
And yes, the Walkers ones are rubbish, but you can get good ones in Millets and places like that.

My bbc Big Challenge pedometer reads about the same as JG. On days when I am mainly in the office I clock between 7 - 10 and when I get a "day off" (mis-named of course), I can do 20,000 easily.
Just make sure when you take the dogs out you actually walk until you raise a sweat, two hours a day of dog walking can clock up 5,000 a time easily.

I use the Weight Watchers one. I like it as you can adjust the sensitivity depoending where you are waring it you find it measures slightly differently so can set it so it counts the right number of steps. It gives you the mileage, steps and bonus points earned, and has a gauge that shows you how far you are towards the next point.

Mine does calories used, steps, distance and time, all in an american accent :D :D
I average about 8000 to 10,000 steps a day which is about 3 to 5 miles, but it uses up less calories than a mars bar ;)
