hi,
i thought id ask some one for a little advice here! i have to girls living at home at the moment, i got the first one as a rescue at 3 years old,a little hard work at times (working beardie) but nothing to bad, then 4 mth after that, we got our second girl as a 8 wk pup,all was well no problems what so ever...until that pup got bigger, our older girl started to mount the pup at about 8 mth old, we stoped this behaviour all together, untill today! i noticed that the older one has now started this again (she is spayed) and was wondering why as she has not attemted this in months, the pup is now coming up to 11 months old, they do get on fine in all other ways, the only major problem i do have (and have allways had with these two) is that my older girl whilst off lead does not let any other dogs near the pup,but when she is by herself is fine off lead with other dogs,i do now take them out separate, but would love to take them out together!
i have never kept to bitches together and would love to know if this is normal behavior in some breeds??, like i say its only been allmost a year since they have been together, all other ways they are perfect..sitting cleaning each other and hugging each other..maybe some times they "miss"each other to much?? but ill be intrested in hearing from anyone with two bitches,oh people that have had problems and now sorted them!!! thanks~michelle

I think it's a dominance thing. Is the younger one a bit boisterous?? Could be that the older one keeps doing it because she is reminding the little one she's in charge.

'my older girl whilst off lead does not let any other dogs near the pup,but when she is by herself is fine off lead with other dogs'

Is the older one possesive? Sounds like she's guarding/protecting her property to me!! (the pup)

Unless the younger pje objects then mounting is not a problem.  It is very common in many species, and in my own expereince spayed bitches are more prone to mounting than allowing themselves to be mounted.  Maybe it is to do with the removal of the female hormones.

I have five bitches, 3 of them spayed and two of the spayed ones indulge in this most often as do the two youngest who are entire.  the eldest having been an only dog only did this to ehr daughter when she herself was in season, but has never bothered much once she was spayed.

Hi Michelle,

As Brainless says it's not uncommon so I'd not be too concerned ;)  The other thing is that your younger bitch (if she hasn't been neutered already) could be coming into season?   Just a thought as my older bitch has tried this a couple of times recently with her daughter (who has not yet had her first season and turned 1yr old today - nope, now yesterday  )

Regards,   Teri :)

hi and thanx everyone!,
yes my older one does like to be boss! shes not nasty with it the pup will gladly follow her all over.
to answer the question is she boisterous...very!! true bouncing beardie!
the pup hasnt been spayed and hasnt had a season "yet" maybe it could be her coming into..ill have a look!!
when the pup is being mounted she doent object she just gets out of the "hold"!! and then they start to play, she has been mounting pup from side on??!!
has anyone had bitches that have done this (without objection) and then had troubles?? as someone once said to me "once bitches fight, you have a problem"
allso the "off lead carry on"!! yes big on is very protective ive seen her look after all sorts of strange stuff, yes i think she thinks the pup is her own,has anyone had problems as such and been able to sort this out if so any tips???id love to let them both off to play with each other and other dogs.

me again!
teri just thought id say, skye came into season yesturday so thats that sorted!!!at least i know next time ill have a few days warning from molly lol.
and shes not trying to mount her "as much" now!!
i have found with skye the past  week her eating habbits have changed, and wonderd if this could be to do with her season,as she seems to be eating more, from once a good eater (when a younger pup)  she turned to a terrible eater, living of fresh air lol i was at my wits end!
i tryed to look up on sites to see if eating habbits change when dogs come into season but never found nothing, only eating habbits of a pregnant bitches, but hopefully its just her old hungry self coming back!! i wouldnt care ive been told her body is fine the way it is for her breed,so known my luck my next post will be"MY BEARDIE IS TO FAT"!!!!

Hi Hairy skye,

Glad all's well after all ;)  My youngster went right off her food for two weeks and I was sure she was ready to come on  but nope, she's determined to stay a baby for a bit longer.  On the plus side her appetite is back to normal - fingers crossed it stays that way

>my next post will be"MY BEARDIE IS TO FAT"!!!! <

:D  Well, it's easier IME getting weight off than on - providing the weather is kind enough for all the extra exercise :D

Regards, Teri
