Hi,
Its now the 63rd Day I have been up all night , Mica panting fast and heavy , The occasional whine ( hourly) . no sign of straining . No distcharge , but her breathing has been fast all night , How long is long enough before taking her to the Vet? I dont want to jump the gun as Its now only the morning of her 63rd day.

Hi, The first stage (panting and bed making) can last a long time - maybe as long as 24 hours. My "rule of thumb" is to know when she has her first proper pushing contraction - and then a puppy should be born within about 2 hours. As long as the contractions gradually get closer together once they get to evry 5 minutes or so you shouodn't have to wait long. My "danger signs" are when the contractions slow down or stop, or sometimes if the first puppy is poorly presented the bitch will squat (like having a pee) to push as opposed to arch her back and push ( which looks like she may be having a poo - which is the correct way). If she has been pushing regular and hard for over an hour with no result, ring the vet for avice, but dont rush her in unless advised to - most bitches whelp safely without a vet, it just HELL ON WHEELS waiting!!

We're on day 62 with Phoebe - 3 days of intermittant panting and bedmaking. bit of a discharge, not much. Getting to the same stage of wondering...... She seems to be eating again now, and everything is going backwards. No contractions at all. Difficult to know how long my patience can last - probably until tomorrow, which is day 63 after all

Hi both, fingers crossed for safe deliveries and hope to hear soon that all is well. I was going through all this a week ago, when the Bonnie was 3 hours delivering her first puppy - I so nearly took her in to the vet, but eventually the first one came backwards and she had 6 within 2 hours. We lost 2 sadly but the other four are doing fine now. I only waited 3 hours, rather than the usual 2 as I could feel 2 little back paws just inside - so nearly born that it was unlikley to be stuck anywhere - I did ring the vet for advice though. I always breathe a sigh of relief when the first one is born, as nine times out of ten if the first one will come ok, the rest usually follow.
- By BRODAN [gb] Date 26.05.02 08:26 UTC
Still no change , rapid panting , occasional whimpers , no pushing, no discharge .
- By westie lover [gb] Date 26.05.02 09:43 UTC
Hi, have you rung the vet yet? I would just to re-assure you. When you say she has been panting hard all night, how long is that? Bonnie was panting when I went I got up in the morning - so I'm not sure how long she had been at it, and didn't have a puppy til 4pm. If you do decide to take her into the vet take someone with you to drive if poss, and a box lined with vet bed and a towel to put over the top and a hot water bottle, with a flask of boiling water to top it up with, though the vets will boil you a kettle to keep puppies warm on the way home if it has cooled down too much. THE most important thing is to keep newborns warm. Put old sheets all over the back seat, a couple of big vet beds on top and lots of towels and a pair of blunt scissors - in case you have any pups born in
the car - which often happens, just when you are convinced she's going to need a C section. It doesn't sound to me like you have big problems - as she is still going strong and not pushing yet. Its not called labour for nothing!! I have everything crossed. :-)

Dear Paul,

Malamutes are not usually ready until the last day (day 63), look out for waters breaking and then if nothing after 2 hours and she looks distress I would advise a word with your vet. If only to put your mind at rest.

What a coincidence, my Mal bitch's name is Mica, and she went right to the last day and went on to produce 7 pups, although after pup no. 4 she seemed to struggle for 2 hours and we had to whip her down to the vets where he gave her a hormone injection and with a bit of help from him she gave birth to a large pup (our first red & white) although he did plonk it in my hand and said "Don't expect it to survive". I just rubbed her with the towel and she squealed & came to life and was fine. We went home and 2 more red & white ones followed. Needless to say we kept the one born at the vet as she was very special and her litter mate also red & white.

After it is all over have a drink or a fag to releive the stress, I certainly needed it.

Good luck,

Jenny & The Wintersperre Gang.

10!!! Well done Mica and you Paul for your suffering too. When the average Mal litter is 6 or 7 you must have been thinking she would never stop :-) It was 5 last time I looked and I told someone this morning that you'd had just the 5. Serves me right for not keeping up to date. Case of think of a number and double it!!
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 27.05.02 13:05 UTC
Phoebe's just had 10 as well. Started at 9.45am,not quite sure if she's finished, but she's settled feeding, so I'm not interfering for a bit. Had a nasty moment with one of the dog pups - gasping for breathe still after I'd given him Dopram drops and been working on him for 1 hour 15 mins. Think he's alright now - lovely pup - guess who we'll be keeping? 6 bitches and 4 dogs, all liver.

Thanks for staying with us, everybody

Well done Mica :D

Good luck for the next few weeks Paul!!!

Kaani sends lots of love to all her half brothers and sisters :D
- By JoFlatcoat (Moderator) [gb] Date 28.05.02 09:08 UTC
Paul - hope yours all fine and feeding, and Mica's been outside (major happening - we had to drag Phoebe out pretty well!).

11 is our total - there had better not be any more now! All a lovely dark conker colour like Mum and Dad. And we managed the first night with minor incident - two pups still plugged in got out of the box when Phoebe went for a drink, and believe it or not, they couldn't climb back in by themselves. Wondered what the rumpus was about - P had really got her knickers in a twist about it all!!

I actually had a few hours sleep - luxury

Thanks for that Jane :D I was rather hoping to forget about it. I think the words ostrich, head and sand apply very well to me at the moment.
- By Naomi [gb] Date 28.05.02 09:27 UTC
When are they due Jayne?
- By maid marian [gb] Date 28.05.02 10:53 UTC
End of June Naomi. Not had vets confirmation because I don't want anyone poking, even a vet!! And I am not keen on scanning at this early stage. I am paranoid about reabsorbtion. But signs are there. she has the sticky discharge, has got picky about her food, so much so that I have had to completely change it. Her stomach is still flat when she stands but her sides look a little bigger as do her teats. Still, she is only 4.1/2 weeks. Floyd is very happy at the moment...he's doing stud work....going round with a grin on his face. I don't know, being unfaithful to Jasmine...with her in her condition as well.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 28.05.02 10:58 UTC
Floyd should be ashamed of himself!!

Poor Jasmine ..abandoned by that great big hairy hunk in her hour of need :D

Best of luck Jayne ...how on earth are you going to be able to let any of the babies go?

Melody
- By maid marian [gb] Date 28.05.02 13:34 UTC
From what I'm told......quite easily Melody. I shan't let them all go. One (lucky?) pup will be staying with me and Mom and Dad.
