Topic Dog Boards / General / injections ?
- By Lyn [gb] Date 28.04.05 12:33 UTC
our puppy had her second injection today, and we thought we`d be able to start taking her for walks, but the vet said to keep her in for 7 to 10 days.  We`ve had dogs before and we always took them out right after their last injections. Does anyone know anything about this ?   Thanks

I think you will find that for people who do vaccinate, this is normal. Personally I never do and my pups go out and begin socialisation at 7 weeks. However, you have and so it may be wise to do as your vet has suggested. :-)

Have you been taking the puppy out at all ?  Not for walks but in your arms to get it used to everyday sights and sounds ?
If not I would ignore the vets advice and get out there a.s.a.p. - good socialisation is essential in order to avoid problems later on.

The injection doesn't give full imunity until after 7 days, so the pup would still be vunerable to deseases now. You should really be taking the pup out in your arms, so s/he can get used to the noises as described above.

yes, we have been taking her out in our arms, she loves it ! and is very intersted in everything going on around her.

Well do as you feel best, personally I would still keep her in my arms for another week just incase. If you are still not sure, try giving your vet a quick ring and see what they say. The receptionist may even be able to tell you with out bothering the vet.

Enjoy your pup :D

Our vet always said 5 days after the second injection, they could go out.

It is best not to take risks, wait the 7 days , there is no hurry.

It;s only in the last few years that they've said days used to be 2 weeks.  I've always taken mine out 7 days later.

I think it will vary based on what your vets are aware of locally in terms of level of risk, if they have seen recent cases of disease they may be more cautious than otherwise.
