Are there any signs to look out for in terms of a phantom pregnancy? If so, are there any dangers with it or any problems which we should be aware of? Poppy had her first season, which lasted 5 weeks, her nipples are now swollen, I am going to ask the vets at her check up tomorrow, but just wondered if anyone had any ideas?
She's definitely not pregnant!!
Yes they can get mastitious if she has milk, just check her teats each day for swellling, heat or hard lumps.

I have just got back from the vets today having been told that my 10 month old pup is having a phantom pregnancy. She finished her first season a few weeks ago but right from day one of her season she changed completely. At first I put it down to period pain (??) and she got better during her frisky period! However for the last month the lively, happy, confident puppy has turned into a miserable, sad, clingy pup. She has lost weight and isn't eating as much - although will devour any treats that come her way - and has become a little snappy with other dogs. She has also been itching her ears and chewing her paws alot (not fleas) which is why I was surprised the vet has decided it's a phantom - she's not lactating although her nipples are a little swollen. She may well have allergies as well which are causing the itching and watery eyes but we won't know until the ph.preg stops.
The vet has prescribed Galstop which I understand is a hormone drug that should regulate her hormones within 6 days and suggested I have her spade if I'm not going to breed her as it is likely she will have this condition after every season.
Hope that helps!
