Topic Dog Boards / Health / helip my dog-mild but continous epilepsy
- By ngocvan [vn] Date 26.04.05 12:09 UTC
My dog suffered from preumonia. It lead to the epilepsy. His head and stomatch jerking mildly but continously (about every minute). He doesn't lose the consciousness or spew saliva. Now the preumonia was over but the epilepsy still remains. A vet told that he this epilepsy will be over if he has a nutritious diet. He have had such a diet but the epilepsy even becomes worse. Could you help me with this problem

Is this common after pneomonia?

Seizures sometimes occur in humans if there's a high fever, DD. It could well be the same in dogs.

I would give a change of diet at least 6 weeks to have any effect. What are you feeding him?

I have asked another the vet in the net. My dog suffered from Canine Distemper. It led to the seizures. Now coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, running nose was over, he eats very much but his head and stomatch keep jerking and jerking ( continously). But vets in my country don't know much about Distemper because is not popular in Vietnam. Could any one tell me detail ways, detail medicine to help him get over jerking?

Sorry to hear your dog had distemper. It used to be common in the UK until the introduction of routine vaccination of dogs was introduced in the 1950s, and now it's very unusual (though still about). I've looked it up in my copy of "Veterinary Notes for Dog Owners" and it says:

"The most serious sign is the development of 'fits'. In a mild fit, the dog twitches its eyes, champs its jaws and salivates slightly. In the most severe type of fit, a full epileptiform convulsion, the dog falls over, makes wild running movements with its legs, champs its jaws and salivates profusely; it may urinate and pass faeces. Recovery from such a fit takes some time and the most severely affected dogs will have repeated convulsions.

"Another nervous effect is the development of 'chorea' - a rhythmic twitch or spasm in a group of muscles (often on the head or legs). Chorea is usually permanent and animals which otherwise recover fully may be left with a lifelong twitch."

I'm afraid your dog's tremor is likely to be permanent. Sorry.
