Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / play biting ?
- By Lyn [gb] Date 25.04.05 17:34 UTC
We have just brought our puppy home today from the dogs home, she is 12 weeks old. What is the best way to stop play biting ?
She was OK for the first couple of hours, but then I think she got overtired, and started the biting. I`ve tried what it said in the book given to me by the dogs home, it says to say no, and then to ignore them, very difficult when its got its teeth in your hand !   I know its her first day here and she`s probably scared and nervous. Thanks

Hi Lyn
Have a look at other previous posts. Behaviour 8/2/05 started by LisaW. This topic was covered including mine re; anti chew spray. You can see what others think.
Good luck, it won't last forever :-)

Thanks for that !  I`m going to try the yelping and leaving the room first LOL   I`ve got a nice bruise coming on my arm from this afternoon !

I've got an 8 week old one here at the moment and I agree its a nightmare!  When I got Poppy (2.5 year old) I went to work looking like somebody who self harms, my arms were a ragged bloody mess of teeth marks and bites!  However, this time I have a handy furry little tiger who I use to deflect attention away by playing with him (he's tougher than me!)  He now only uses my arm if there's nothing else!  Which is why I walked into work today, pulled out my purse and a small furry tiger went flying across the room  ..... ;)

LOL that's your excuse

I use a white tuggy that is meant to be chewed & is actually called a dental tuggy or similar I get up & walk away when they start(when puppies)however my rescue GSD allows any puppies we have to use her & her very chewable tail  as a teething toy & when she has had enough she is the one who disciplines the puppy & I haven't had a puppy who nipped me for at least 9 years as she has been the supernanny to all but one of our cavaliers(he was here before her)

Seriously tho' I would walk away but not do an No or Ouch as it could encourage the nipping.
