Hi,have just bought rottie girl pup,she is so loving with all the family,but want to eat strangers and growls at all other adults,the breeder was,nt helpful as his wife got taken ill he would,nt let any of the new owners pick the pups up,so she,s now 16weeks,with no social graces at all !!,i have enrolled us at training classes and are slowly walking a bit further each day to broaden her horizons,i am not a novice dog owner (was brought up on german shepherds but fancied a change!),but have never had a pup like this before and would be grateful of any hints or advice on this problem.

I would say place the emphasis on socialisation, with dogs and people.
I realise she's  a rott, but if she hasn't been out of her breeder's home she may well be very phased by everything and actually be afraid, but reacting in a strong way. Allow her to make her own way with people, don't force her to be friends as this could backfire.

I would tend to take her out almost all the time, unless she seems affected in a bad way in which case it could be too much for her. Take plenty of food, good stuff like chicken and lliver treats, not boring biscuits; and give her food every time people or dogs appear.

It's difficult because you have to be aware of overdoing socialisation as well as under doing it, both can have a negative effect. Gwen Bailey's excellent book "The  Perfect Puppy" will be helpful to you.

I would suggest that if the pup doesn't improve within one week, try to find a reputable and experienced trainer/behaviourist who can use understanding of canine behaviour to guide you, as every day at this stage is crucial!! :)

Your vet should be able to recommend a reputable behaviourist.
