Topic Dog Boards / Health / Cut foot

My dog has cut his toe through the vein on some glass.  The vet said it was a clean cut and has stitched it all back together.  It is bandaged and the stitches will be in for 2 weeks.  Does anyone have any suggestions for speeding up the healing process?  He is on Arnica pills and just having a 5 minute walk on lead twice a day.  He is a very active dog normally so would rescue remedy help to keep him chilled out whilst on restricted excercise?

Thanks

Hi Emma,

Sorry about your boy - I know how dfficult it is to restrict exercise and keep them and ourselves sane    Try playing some "mind" games with him during the day and evening at random intervals - nothing that requires too much physical effort from him but if you can play something like hide and seek with a treat/toy/small child :D (but not on a slippy surface) - tired minds make tired dogs so he'll be a little less frustrated with his short time only walks.
Don't see any harm in using RR but it's really more to appease stress than simply over energetic behaviour.
Try dabbing his cut foot with Witch Hazel - I've always found that to promote healing and help toughen up the new skin.

HTH, regards, Teri :)

Herbal arnica is used to thin the blood, quite useful in dispersing a haematoma i.e. bruise but not so pertinent to a cut healing.  It should never be used before or after surgery without discussing with the surgeon or vet.  Personally I don't believe homoeopathy makes any difference physiologically so that wouldn't do any harm :)  It is said that vitamin E helps promote healing of wounds and Witch Hazel does seem good for this too.

Thanks for the advice.  I can't put witch hazel on yet as it's still bandaged - going for a dressing change on Tuesday.  He only seems to be lame when he remembers!

My boy cut his pad badly a couple of months ago, the vet prescibed Zincaderm for 3 weeks which is to aid healing and contains Vitamin A.The pad healed really well.
