just looking for information on the temperment of the Japanese Acita. I am wondering how they are with children and other dogs. I already have Pyr.s and Goldens.

with thanks,

Pauline.

Purely from my own experience I have found that they are wonderful with children and adults, but toally unreliable with other dogs. I'm not sure if this is when there is more than one or dependent on the sexes but a friends mum and dad had a bitch to start with, and she was fine with other dogs, then they got a dog and they have had nothing but trouble with them. Attacking other dogs etc.

Just my thoughts. The Japanese Akita is a wonderful breed but not for everybody.

I have always admired the Akita. There are a few that go to my ringcraft class and I was talking to one of the owners about them and I asked what are they like with other breeds and she said that they don't like other breeds, fine with their own breed but not others. That put me right off 'cause I couldn't stick with one breed only.

A friend of mine from a few years ago had three. The only way she found to keep the peace was three separate rooms! Not my idea of having a good time with my dogs!!!

We rehomed an entire male two year old Akita, but I have to say he was totally un Akita like in his ways. He had originally lived with border collies and he lived with us with our ESS and saw various Sibes arrive after him (all female). As a breed they are very terratorial, not good with other dogs, not good with their own sex, but can often be kept in male/female pairs.

Their temperament in the home is excellent if standards are set from day one. We have a number through our puppy playgroup and due to their cuteness as puppies, inexperienced owners are prone to letting them get away with too much and suddenly they have an adolescent dog that doesn't want to obey them and see's it's way up through the home pack by dominating firstly the children and then the adults. A lot are rehomed because of this.
