I've been reading through quite a few threads and posts and I'd like to know two things please, the first is, why are there such a lot of arguments on the threads and secondly, why do a lot of posters not check their posts before submitting them ?  There are some terrible spelling mistakes.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.04.05 09:52 UTC
Differences of opinion, which can be discussed calmly and rationally, or can become more passionate, occur because ... well, people are all different and have different views about things! As for the spelling mistakes, some people have visual impairments, some are dyslexic, some are less well-educated. But we're a generally a very tolerant bunch!
:)
- By Davedee [gb] Date 24.04.05 09:58 UTC
If you go to a modern Uni you will find most subjects are not marked on their spelling, the paper needs to be legible, no more. There are very few teachers in UK who can actualy teach grammer.
- By Radar Ears [gb] Date 24.04.05 10:01 UTC
I'm not de-crying anyone who is not a good speller, my OH is not that good, what I meant was, when you get "teh" instead of "the" and "og" instead of "of" I wondered if it was because people were in a hurry to get their point across and the ideas were flowing faster than they could type ! (lol)
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.04.05 10:55 UTC
Yep that is me in a nutshell, and I hasve ther visual imapirment too, so that when I place my hands back on the keyboard sometimes I aplace them wrong and the wrong keys get hit.  Also words spelt back to front is a result of lack of hand mind co-ordination.

Not called Brainless for nothing :D

I could go the throug the laborious process of proof readin before posting, but then it is only chat and not an essay or book for publication :D

Shame there isn't a spell check feature when you hit post!!!
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.04.05 11:15 UTC
Also the text is bigger once posted and the errors jump out at you :D  But then it is too late to edit ans the time limit is quite short!!!  was just told I am too late :D
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.04.05 10:15 UTC
Lol! Nice one, DD! :D
- By Isabel Date 24.04.05 10:05 UTC
There is certainly a great deal of discussion, that is what a forum is isn't it? :)  Whether you call them arguements is surely a matter of opinion but as this board is well moderated that is very little personal stuff tolerated therefore all opinions are freely aired.
I think if this was an exam paper I would be checking my posts more thoroughly for spelling, grammer, punctuation etc. but it's not :)
- By liberty Date 24.04.05 11:07 UTC
I thinkwe're all guilty of spelling errors especialy (sp) when you feel strongly about something

librety ;)
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 24.04.05 11:50 UTC
spelling errors whatever next?????

Does anyone really care or take notice?
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 24.04.05 11:52 UTC
Obviously some people do Blondie, they must be bored or something and need to start nip-picking at others! Sad though, isn't it? ;-)
- By Natalie1212 Date 24.04.05 11:49 UTC
I find that I can type pretty fast but I have to be looking at the keyboard the whole time, so I hardly ever read what I have written! Also I think I type quicker than I think sometimes, especially in 'heated debates!!!' so sometimes I can miss out whole words!!! When I was 11, we had spelling and reading test's, and my actual spelling age was then said to be like a 14 year old, I don't think it ever got any better than that, if any thing, I think it got worse actually!!!

Natalie
- By Tigerlily [gb] Date 24.04.05 11:51 UTC
LOL :-) I think mine went backwards too Natalie! :-D
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 24.04.05 11:55 UTC
tell me about it...goodness me...whatever next....worse things going on here than a few typo's!!!!!
:)
- By liberty Date 24.04.05 11:56 UTC
Thats a bit harsh, lots of topics are disscussed, don't reply if it bothers you then.
- By Natalie1212 Date 24.04.05 13:28 UTC
I had the worst one the other day, although it was a typo, not a spelling mistake, I got my own name wrong! :D How dumb is that?!!!! I put Natlie instead of Natalie LOL Mind you most people say it like Natlie, but normally I am Nat, or Nats.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.04.05 18:49 UTC
Yep never mastered the touch typing properly though I do type using the right fingers, just they hit the keys in the wrong order quite a lot, and also often hit two keys together :D
- By Carla Date 24.04.05 12:14 UTC
Um - perhaps you should check yours? If we are being pedantic the correct use of a "?" does not involve a space between it and the word it follows.

People who live in glass houses.... :D :D
- By ChristineW Date 24.04.05 13:08 UTC
I have to agree to a certain extent about people about spelling & grammar, mine is far from perfect I know that but occasionally I read an answer or a posting that has maybe been written in 'txt msg' or has no capitals and punctuation.     I appreciate that some people feel very strongly about a subject and answer straightaway without checking what they have written but if their point cannot be easily read then basically, the whole gist  of their reply is lost!
- By Lindsay Date 24.04.05 13:41 UTC
My own spelling and grammar has got worse since using the internet and email - I find that I am in such a hurry to get things done, that I don't always check thoroughly, whereas once I used to take a pride in my spelling. I think too that sometimes, I'm more concerned about whether I'm coming across well, than about the grammar. Sometimes I do do tupos, but they are the keyboard's fault, not mine <g>.

:D This is why I prefer working with animals rather than humans, we always have everything and anything to moan about :D

Was this post really needed, all posts seem to be along the same moany lines lately lol.

I doubt very much that the spelling will improve and if it does it wont last lol, it isnt the end of the world :D

See....now even I'm moaning............
- By liberty Date 24.04.05 14:07 UTC
Zoe that is the beauty of the internet, something to moan about and somewhere to post it. Best not taken too seriously :D :D
- By Radar Ears [gb] Date 24.04.05 14:10 UTC
Hi Zoe,

This post wasn't really needed at all, I just wondered what response I would get and I'm not disappointed.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.04.05 14:17 UTC
So, are you just a WUM then? If so, can you explain what kick WUMs get from their 'fun'?
- By Radar Ears [gb] Date 24.04.05 14:26 UTC
Hi Jeangenie,

No I'm definately not a WUM, please read my later reply, that will explain everything.
- By Radar Ears [gb] Date 24.04.05 14:08 UTC
Hi ChloeH,

Glad you noticed that one regarding the "?"

I wondered who would, you get the prize for being the most observant, well done.

People who live in glass houses, need a very good window cleaner.
- By liberty Date 24.04.05 14:12 UTC
Just a bit of sport for you then was it?
- By Radar Ears [gb] Date 24.04.05 14:24 UTC
Hi Liberty,

No, it wasn't a bit of sport, I am a serious dog person, I usually just read the posts and don't reply (thank goodness for that I hear you say) recently, there are a lot that I've read where the poster makes a statement and then is "rounded upon" by others and is made to feel a fool, most probably.

All I really wanted to get across, was that everyone is entitled to their own opinion and whether others agree or don't agree, don't let things descend into almost personal, heated arguments.

A forum is where people should be friendly to each other, ask for help and receive it in a kind manner and nobody should think that their way is the "right way".

The reason that I mentioned the spelling, is that I tried to read a post today and I could not make head nor tail of it, because as the lady said in her earlier post (sorry I forget who you are) that the gist is lost if there are too many errors.

I just posted a polite question to see what would happen, that's all, I have probably offended a few, but that was not my intention at all, but I suppose that old adage of "if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen" comes to mind.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.04.05 14:28 UTC
I think all the answers you received were very polite, considering the question! ;)
:)
- By Radar Ears [gb] Date 24.04.05 14:30 UTC
Hi Jeangenie,

They were polite, but what do you mean "considering the question"?

There was nothing wrong in my question, I just mentioned a general fact, I did not say anything about anyone.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 24.04.05 15:02 UTC
I just thought it a bit odd that someone would think the way a poster expressed themselves was of more importance than what they were trying to say, that's all. :) Not everyone has spelling and grammar as strong points - in fact some people don't have English as a first language! I wouldn't want them to feel afraid of putting their point of view because they're afraid their spelling is going to be picked on! ;) We're out of school now!
:)
- By Isabel Date 24.04.05 14:31 UTC
Why would you feel a fool to find that others don't share your opinion?  Very few posters are rude enough to just say "you are wrong, I am right" usually what follows is a discussion in which they put their rationale behind their opinions.  Why put an opinion on a forum if you don't wish to hear others, you might as well just sit at home with  :)
Someone recently referred to joining school debating societies, I think in a derogatory fashion, but I do feel if more people did that they would grow up understanding what debate is all about without getting so personally upset about it :)
- By Radar Ears [gb] Date 24.04.05 14:46 UTC
Hi Isabel,

What happened was this, I have been reading through, as I said and noticed that people seemed to be "rounded on", then a friend of mine or rather an "e-mail friend" who shall remain nameless, told me that she'd posted on here and felt that her statement, (whatever it was, I don't know) was (for want of a better expression) regarded as rubbish by other people and she felt quite upset as she was only trying to join in, she said that it has put her off posting on this forum.
- By liberty Date 24.04.05 14:52 UTC
Please..........this is getting sad. She is entitled to her, opinion, she should have the courage of her convictions, this is not a witch hunt site. I think everyone has better things to do than belittle someone.
- By Isabel Date 24.04.05 14:53 UTC
That is a shame she should feel like that.  If you have been reading threads you will know that as the board is well moderated no one is permitted to "round on" people or use any personal insults.  People will, however, give their opinion which they are perfectly entitled to do.  Sometimes you are going to post a view when the majority hold a different one, thats just how it is,  but it is no good taking it personally when that happens.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 24.04.05 19:04 UTC
Trouble is that you need to hear both sides before forming a valid opinion :) Whilst your friend may have felt that her statement was rubbished, it *is* possible that it was a bit different to that.

I obviously have no idea who she is or what she posted but it is telling that you say she posted 'a statement' ....that implies that she expressed an opinion ...not everyone is going to agree with an opinion. If there are several people here at the same time who ALL disagreed with her, then it will appear as though they are ganging up ..whereas if she had waited there would , invariably, be people who came along and agreed ...it is the nature of CD :D

There are also some subjects that are always going to provoke a strong expression of opinions and not only on Champdogs  :D :D Possibly she unwittingly made her statement on one of those subjects?
- By liberty Date 24.04.05 14:32 UTC
No ones way is right, that is why we enjoy using this forum, everyone is entitltled to their opinion and the old one of getting ganged up, is used too frequently to be honest.

I'm sure you have a lot to offer the forum.

and apologies for spelling and grammatical errors ;)
- By Blondiflops [gb] Date 24.04.05 17:13 UTC
As I said previously what a complete waste or time and energy...someone's very bored and playing childish games......testing people to see who would notice an obvious mistake GET A LIFE OP
- By susantwenty? [gb] Date 24.04.05 18:23 UTC
it would be boring if everyone had the same views i quite like it when it gets abit firey, thats what debates are like just dont take anything personally, the more you post the more you get to know the reactions and what makes others tick, it's well worth posting on here as some people have very good knowledge, even in families people come to blows it happens everywhere and it happens more on here because people are compassionate about their dogs with their own ideas on feeding, training, bathing and grooming this is how you learn.
- By Brainless [gb] Date 24.04.05 18:57 UTC
It is interesting Frqank, and I wonder if it has something to so with the Brits natural reserve (ihibition) which is maybe shelved when anonymous.  the kidn of heated debate we have here is nothing compared to what goes on in my extended family when we get onto Religion and Politics, and I will admit to loving getting my Dad going, as he is one of these black and white people.  He usually gives in in the end and calls me stubborn :D

How many people listenfing to foreign speakers like Poles (that me) Italians Spaniards, who geticulate a lot and are quite loud, believe they are having an argument, instead of just an exchange of views.
- By Missthing [gb] Date 24.04.05 19:20 UTC
Frank,
I couldn't agree more.  I stumbled across this website following another link and didn't realise it was for breeders and owners of 'proper' dogs rather than mutts which is what I tend to like - but I'm not a snob so carried on. Anyway I like the idea that people get charged up and sometimes go into a bit of a rant.  They obviously feel passionate about their particular subject and if I or anyone else disagree, its doesn't really matter because they don't know where I live so can't come round and put me right with a couple of Staffies. (I know, I know... I only put that in to be provocative.)

I've had some good tips from this site so long may the 'heated debates' continue as long as we don't get personal.  And **please** don't anyone be put off by bad spelling or typing; EXPRESS YOURSELVES!
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 24.04.05 19:21 UTC
Psssssssst....*some* of us don't have Staffies :D :D :D
- By Missthing [gb] Date 24.04.05 19:31 UTC
I know but Staffy owners seem to feel they - or rather their dogs - get a lot of undeserved flak.  (Whereas JRTs deserve every little barking bit.) Oh dear...will there be another SOH failure?
- By kayc [gb] Date 24.04.05 19:48 UTC
My father, a retired politician, gave me some good advice many, many years ago.....  Never enter a debate if you are unsure of your facts. Never start a debate because 'its your own personal gripe'. Sit back, listen to the others, cherry pick and use the 'evidence'.......  Basically, everyone has an opinion, and it is good to listen, but just because it does not coincide with your own, does not neccessarily mean it is wrong, but use all advice to the requirement of needs.  It took me a few years and then some to realise what he meant ;)
- By Radar Ears [gb] Date 24.04.05 19:13 UTC
Hi Blondiflops,

You and all the others will be very pleased to note that I will never post on here again, (I can hear you all cheering) but before I go I will say one thing, you are EXACTLY the kind of person I was talking about, this is what your message said:

"As I said previously what a complete waste or time and energy...someone's very bored and playing childish games......testing people to see who would notice an obvious mistake GET A LIFE OP"

That is so rude, you are so rude, it's no wonder that new posters are put off by a lot of you, you have just
proved what my friend said to me.

For your information I was not testing to see if someone would spot an obvious mistake, I put my hands up to it, I made a mistake, I'm only human, it's just that I'm a quick thinker and when ChloeH spotted what I had missed, I just used my stock reply, if you are so clever you'd have realised that.

Don't bother to answer, because I won't see it, bye.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 24.04.05 19:20 UTC
And that shows exactly what I am talking about :( ...Out of ALL the replies here, you have picked up on one of the very few that was downright rude ......you have ignored the others apart from the spelling mistake one
- By Davedee [gb] Date 24.04.05 19:33 UTC

>a friend of mine or rather an "e-mail friend" who shall remain nameless, told me that she'd posted on here and felt that her statement, (whatever it was, I don't know) was (for want of a better expression) regarded as rubbish by other people<

Davedee
Your friend was right there are a few here who have been speeling the same old thing for years, confined things, narrow and predictable and they try and gang up and break up posts, this board is well known for it but it's not the only board like that.

Radar Ears
>and she felt quite upset as she was only trying to join in, she said that it has put her off posting on this forum.<

Davedee
Well if she was upset then that's down to her own personal sensitivity and only she can deal with it. I have seen a lot of other posts on other boards who say they did the same as her and reacted the same as her by never coming back again. It's usually because intelligent individuals, such as your friend, will not lower themselves intellectually to the levels many on here function at and just don't post anymore.

What she probably never thought about. Is the fact that there are far more people who read these posts than she may realise. They can see, as anyone can see, who the gobbledygooks are and differentiate between those who are self degrading without insight and those who not only make sense but clearly have factual, information to offer and know the subject they are writing about, it's the hidden readers who benefit a lot from this board.

The other thing your friend is not talking into account is that the sort of thing which upset her is an internet thing, it does not matter what the genre is there the net is known for a hiding place for freaky types, if she posts again just suggest she ignores the gobbledygooks, they are easy to spot and nothing to contribute to posts they try to disrupt and you're right, they only operate in packs, alone they are nothing and cannot function, (dysfunctional).
- By liberty Date 24.04.05 20:25 UTC
I for one will not be putting Blondiflops name forward to the Diplomatic Corps. You must not let one one person put you off a site, you'd get no where.
- By Scamp [gb] Date 24.04.05 21:57 UTC
Radar Ears- if you get upset over what a complete stranger, nothing more than a screen name to you, says on the web, then I envy you really; you see, I find plenty of things in the REAL world to upset me, plenty of rude and nasty people have crossed my path, and if I was lucky enough to live in a world where such people don't cross my path, then perhaps I would find the energy to get upset over a chatroom. So if I don't appreciate the tone in someone's post on a website...well...I usually change the topic and leave that person be! :) People who feel the need to be abusive and lack the ability to base their arguments on, well, ANYTHING at all (other than "you are thick and wrong") are perhaps not worth even thinking about -it does say something about them... Do you see what I mean? Please don't take this the wrong way, I am just trying to say that this is, after all, just an anonymous form of communication and for all we know, "Kelly17" is in fact  a hairy old bloke called Trevor with an IQ smaller than his shoe size and the sophistication of a rodent, so it is hardly worth giving too much value to whatever rubbish they might be coming up with. As somene far older and wiser once said: "You are always the bigger person when you walk away". (i.e. walk away from the abusive tirade  and resume associating with civilized people.)

Anyhow, I do agree with you on teh pselling point! Contrary to what you may all think, I am not actually dyslexic unless I am typing, and that's when   words such as the, and , but, of, seem to get a bit muddled up. I guess it is a case of brain going faster than fingers...    (Besides, English is not my first language,  as could be the case for other users -this being a world wide web and all that- so I do sometimes get a bit confused) However, I do sometimes fail to get the point of a particular post, due to the lack of punctuation and capital letters, and in some cases I won't even bother to try and "de-code" the text, as the grammar is simply too shocking. Someone mentioned earlier that some of you may be less well educated than others, but I would have thought, regardless of level of education, that anyone speaking English as their first language would at least master the basics! (or are all the "awful sins of bad spelling" commited by foreigners? ;) )Not wishing to draw attention to any particular incidents, but I think we can all think of examples.....

So don't disappear just yet, just because some people feel big when they are shooting their mouths off. To be honest, I think the way you communicate (and even argue, or perhaps "debate" is a better term) says something about your background and upbringing, and the fact that rudeness upsets you just shows that you were brought up with some standards, unlike some... :)
