My wee 6 month old westie doesnt cock his leg yet when he is peeing - he has started to sniff around lampposts but is still 'sqautting' to pee - should he not be cocking his leg yet?

Hi, I was wondering when my pup would start cocking his leg, so I will watch this thread too :-)

Don't worry! The age at which they start to cock varies, but it isn't usually before roughly 6 months. Some never do (which is an absolute godsend, because you can stand near market stalls etc without fear)!

Can only live in hope then ;-) Thanks Jeangenie :-)

Jeangenie

Thanks for the feedback!!  I will keep an eye on his wee leg though - he might decide to cock it yet!!

I was going to post about this myself. Ralph's six months old and he hasn't lifted his leg yet and he will only do a wee in our back garden, never on a walk is this strange?

mine have only just recently started to wee when on walks its nothing to worry about

Lennon is 6 mths old also, and has yet to cock his leg.  He has only just starting peeing on walks as well.  Here's something weird though, when he does have a pee in the garden, he leans forward (can't get my paws wet) and then lifts his back right leg.  I think he'll start to cock his leg very soon.

Cheers :)

Harry,

My Labrador was 11 years old on 10th March, as a pup, he took months to cock his leg, but he hardly ever has done, all through his 11 years he has leaned forwards to tiddle, just cocking his leg occasionally !

One of my Shar Pei started doing this at around 6 months and only ever cocks his leg.  My other male always squatted.  My sisters mini dashie squats too.  Think it varies.  I have been lucky with my boy who cocks his leg he hasn't really done it anywhere he shouldn't except one day he cocked his leg up a car (I was looking away) and the person opened their car door and he carried on peeing!  Luckily it was my brother in law and he saw the funny side of being drenched in wee!

I think the best time my dog cocked his leg was when I met my ex boyfriend on the local shoot, my dog ran up to him and cocked his leg, weeing in his welly boot, he had to walk round with it till it dried out, ha,ha!!! My dogs way of saying "Ha, take that" !!!!

I wish my dog didn't cock his leg.   My bitch only leaves brown spots on the lawn, which eventually grow back greener. I spent years growing buxus topiary balls in my garden from little things to lovely big ones.   Every one of them now has burnt brown leaves on the sides.   And once he cocked his leg against a large terracotta pot - it stunk like wee for at least two months.
