Grass - why oh why do dogs eat it?  Lennon seems more keen on it that any of my dogs in the past.  I've always seen grass eating as a sign of an "upset", and the grass tends to make them sick.  Lennon is not eating it for this, I don't believe.  He eats it because he can, but soooo much.  Where we walk is all grass and he just grabs at it as we walk along.  It doesn't appear to be doing him any harm, but it's not only grass.  He will also eat weeds, earth, stones (if I don't catch him in time) and just about anything else.  It would seem that if he sees it, it has to be picked up and eaten/discarded depending on what it is.  He had a dead mouse last night that I managed to get off him. 

Should I be worried about this behaviour, or is it something he will grow out of.

For those of you who don't know Lennon, he is a 6mth old Japanese Shiba Inu who has been with me for almost 2 weeks (oh, and he's totally fab - but then mums are prejudiced aren't they!)

My dogs graze too. Young growing wheat is a particular favourite of all of them, but one's quite happy grazing the lawn when I'm gardening. (He's also fond of fresh lawnmowings, but I prevent him eating them - if they're bad for horses, they can't be good for dogs!) They do it because they enjoy it!

It's also a learned behaviour. When my mother's dog was young (about 9 months) he didn't start grazing till we visited and he saw my dogs doing it. He looked astonished for a moment, copied them, and did it every day till he died at the age of 14!

At least mine is black and white and also called a cow at times. :-) She loves grass first thing in the morning with dew on it. She does this on the run. If she is feeling poorly then the grass in the garden is what she goes for. Must taste different. If she isn't feeling poorly and fancies a munch then the grass is all hers if she sees the others having a crafty nibble. :-0

I'll never forget the 1st time Casey did it, she was approx 5 months, I'd only had her a couple of weeks and she was in the park playing with a lab. The lab stopped playing and began nibbling on grass, Casey watched then went beserk, ripping huge tufts out whilst watching the lab all the time.
Everything Casey does is over the top.

None of my Labs eat grass, but Megan just had to get her daily fix :).  Only thing is to make sure that you know the grass has not been treated, not so bad at this time of the year though.
