i have a german shorthaired pointer(buddy). i saved him from the spca. he is beautiful, loving, and for the most part behaves. he has broken through the fence twice, house screens twice and broken from the leash numerous times. he is about 2yrs and for the most part will stay or walk until he sees a bird, duck, or rabbit. we live on a canal and these animals are always around. we do not know how to control this problem - please help!
p.s. we have a cockateil that is let free in our home and he does not bother him.

thank you

If he broke from the leash either you or the leash were not strong enough.

These dogs belong to the HPR group of gundogs and are bred to hunt; probably not a wise choice for someone who finds this or how to control it a problem.

Failure to control this instinct or finding an outlet for it could result in the premature death of your dog, if not others...........

Find yourself a very good trainer who understands HPRs and how to channel their instincts and redirect it onto toys or, alternatively consider if this is a good choice of breed for you...............
