Topic Dog Boards / General / Where should my dog holiday?

I am going away for a weekend for a family wedding this is the first time i have left my dog with somebody other than family and I am quite worried.  Charlie is a cavalier King Charles spaniel but a rescue and has a few special needs,  my options seem to be a dog kennel recomended by a friend which costs £7 a day and a lady who will look after him in her home at £18 a night.  This seems like a large difference to be honest but although i would be inclined to go with having him looked after in a home I wonder if this is the best idea. I have explained that he cannot be walked off the lead. maybe he would be better in a kennel with a fenced in excercise area. I would like to hear anybodies views to help me decide.  What is a reasonable price to pay for kenneling?  Where would he be better off?

For security I would go for kennels - providing you've looked round them and are happy with what you see.

Remember, if you do get a pet sitter to ask if you can have one of their other clients numbers to check if they're a genuine service and if their good.
After all, not all people say who they are and there are some dogey geezers out there :(

do be careful - my sister used a pet sitter to look after her two cats and two rabbits once, with explicit instructions to keep the cats indoors (they are both very feral), and the rabbits in their pen - two days into the trip, the woman called my sister complaining about a flea infestation, and to say she'd let the cats out but they hdan't come back!  not only that, but the rabbits were out as well - and had chewed through a yucca plant and damaged some furnishings. And, no flea infestation - I had to go to the flat to let the exterminator in; the woman said she'd been there that morning and come out covered in flea bites and so on - I didn't see one flea.

Defniitely recommended talking to previous clients if you can, you msut be sure fo these sitters' credentials - of course there are excellent ones out there but be aware.  Same with kennels, some are great but a few are very bad, so again check them out beforehand - if you can see the staff handling some of the dogs, so much the better, it could give you an idea of how they do it.
